Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Kids FUN Races and Freestyle Comps

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All

OK, so its been a few years since I last raced, and never done any freestyle comps.

Little one wants to start doing some fun races and freestyle comps, but struggling to find any!!

'Back in the day' there was Rossendale Summer Race League, (mmm the smell of Mr Sheen, burning skis and flesh!!) but that didn't run last year.

I see Stoke do a summer race league, which is good, and I think Gloucester do too.

What about other races and freestyle comps.

I don't mind indoors or out - hes skiing at stoke and tam each week to get used to both surfaces (and I love the chilled atmosphere at both of them!)

I stress they MUST BE FUN events, none of that taking it too seriously lark - he's only 4, I don't want to be having to take a marquee, full servicing setup and a stern pushy parent face with me Happy Happy (You know who you are out there Happy ) - they can stay at home until many years down the line ;-P

At 4 he should be enjoying skiing and not trying to compete in my opinion. Although small kids may do competitions and I have seen many in Freestyle events, I think it just strengthens their faults so its even more difficult to get rid of them later. Please don't let him do 'fun moguls' until he can ski moguls properly, not snowploughing in the troughs.

@mogulski,
There are a few 4 year olds at Snowtrax who love the races. It's just a great days out for all the kids. Some take it a bit more seriously than others, but at the end of the day it's just a picnic with their mates.

@mogulski, its his choice not mine, he loves being with his friends doing comps. He's got that competitive nature.

He's done a few race and freestyle comps over the summer, loves it and did really well. He's pretty advanced for his age, but most importantly he really enjoys doing the comps.

There are comps and then there are comps which is why I specified FUN comps. Having competed a fair bit myself no way would I allow him to do normal comps, all taken way to seriously, but whilst he's wanting to do things ill support and encourage him.

As for moguls, no chance Happy - he's no experience in skiing them Happy

As musher says, at that age its just a great fun. Some of my fondest memories as a kid we sitting on the side of the slope at rossendale and doing the summer race league Happy

@PaulC1984, +1 for Snwotraxx, they have a really good approach, especially with the younger kids.

Gloucester summer league is a team event - so you'd need to hook up with a club which sends a team. When son # 1 started they had a minimum age of 5 for that - not sure if it's still the case.

There are also schools races, some of which don't require you to be part of a school team, and other entry level events. Midland Ski Club run a winter race league series on Friday evenings once a month through the winter, which would be another localish option for you.

@Okanagan, Thanks for this. We ski at Tam and Stoke so both have teams. Unfortunately White Mountain are on Weds evenings so a bit late. Stoke better option with weekend training. Not even sure if stoke or white mountain teams go to Gloucester?? Things have changed rather a lot with stokes race team when I was last skiing with them (god I feel old!)

We are planning to move further south in about 18months, which puts us rather close to you wink

Anything like this at xscape? Since my split with mrs T , my 8yr old hasn't skied since she was 6 when she was showing the teenagers how to do it. I've been trying to persuade her and Mrs T to let me take her at half terms but I think she's not keen on leaving mum n big sisters for a week. She loved ski school and being with the other kids.
The last two school sports days, she has won every race, against girls and boys, once she gets across the line, she turns around to cheer on her friends.
If there's a fun kids club where she can ski with other kids, it might be a way of getting her back on skis.

.@tangowaggon, MK or Castleford?
Ski MK race team will run training from 6 years old up: http://skimkraceteam.roundtablelive.org/
For Castleford you want Lions: http://lionsskiclub.co.uk/mini-mayhem/2147483647/

But if you've a dry slope near you, don't discount that either. Lots will have active kids clubs based at them too.

@tangowaggon, if the ski teams aren't what you are after then Xscape do a children's academy.

https://www.snozoneuk.com/snozone-snoacademy/ It's on when Jnr trains and all the kids seem to be having fun.

Assuming you're north of Castleford then would Sunderland be nearer? Race club and kids development sessions running there too, if you'd consider dry slope. Ravens or Tigers.

As the crow flies, Sunderland isn't that far away, you can see it on a clear day but there's a lump of North Sea in the way from Whitby, by road it's 65miles each way, if I do any, I think the extra 25miles each way is worth it for a slope twiceas long and "real" snow.
If the Middlesbrough slope gets built, ???

People from Stoke do race at Gloucester just not at the fun races because no one knew about them. I imagine if they know in advance there's more than enough racers to make up a team. Stoke will also be competing in the Pendle winter league which is a series of fun races which should start in October.
