Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

WHICH All-Mountain SKI?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Help! snowHead 's I am looking for a really good 'All-mountain' ski to replace some damaged B2's (last seasons) I was quite pleased with them, but I am lacking in knowledge of what's out there this year - models changing etc. B2 has changed and I am wondering,

What other skis should I shortlist for testing? Puzzled

I am advanced intermediate, 5' 10", 90 kg (at the moment, but decreasing a bit! Toofy Grin ) I want to ski about 50% on piste & 50% off piste.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Confusion starts when I look at ski tests - say Ski & Board - Is the category 'Freestyle' the same as 'Freeride'?

I just want a want to try put together a shortlist of skis to test, say eight to ten tops and have been trolling through the 'search' facility here to try to put one together. So far;

Rossignol Bandit B3
Volkl Supersport Allstar (Rave reviews but little user feedback)
Volkl Unlimited
Dynastar Legend 8000

Any others ?

Probably worth trying one of the Head Monsters (take your pick on width) as all reports (and personal experience) suggest the edge hold/ice handling is excellent which has to be a consideration in the Alps

I have bought some Volkl Unlimited AC4s this season and found them excellent in conditions ranging from beautifully grommed pistes to icy moguls to knee deep powder. I also tried the Dynastar Legend 8000s but really struggled on them. This may be more a reflection on my skiing than the quality of the ski though. Until this season I had snowboarded for the last 10 years but reverted back to skiing this year.

Atomic Metrons. They go anywhere. The B5's will be too stiff, and probably the M11's as well, but if you have the chance of trying the 10s or 9s, then take it!

Sorry Rob but I disagree. An M11 in 172 is certainly not too stiff for someone of BC's stated ability & build - & a b5 in 162 is only slightly stiffer although less forgiving. I'd recommend adding them both to your test list along with the Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous & Top fuel models.

Bernard Condon,

The XL will have great bite on edge and track through chopped up stuff very well. In deeper stuff you will need to balance yourself well to stop a dive but for a 50/50 will be v tough to beat. If you want more float then the 8000 is a great ski but can't live with the XL for edge hold. Other than that I would look at the AC3 for XL characteristics.

I'll post a review of the XL, 8000 and Stockli Snake as soon as I can

Line do exist, this year they have had a few troubles getting them released. only got released in uk this year on Friday so could be why you havent seen them, that and the fact that EB dont sell them.

Line chronic is a definite all mountain ski, wood core, 80mm under foot, true twin and pretty stiff. Plus can pick them up cheap if you know where to look,

Has anybody tried Public Enemy skis? I had a go on a hired pair. Not much side cut, but they seemed OK on gentle-ish slope. On steep and near icy though (top of La Fee at LDA, if you know it) I would have been a Public Liability if anybody had been in the way. Fortunately, I did not let loose until I had a totally clear piste. I could not control the speed much, and had to throw in turn after turn, until the piste flattened out some and I was able to run out and slow down. Quite an experience. I went down the mountain immediately, and swapped back to good old dependable B2s.

I must say that the skis were a bit long (179) - and I am full prepared to believe I wasn't skier enough for the skis. The graphics weren't quite me either Laughing

For the remainder of the holiday, 174 B2s were fine.

Jack Hallam,

Pretty much..!! They still have a few fans amongst skidder type - thats no bad thing, by the way - and a couple of my friends still swear by them... Off-piste they will do ok but will be totally outclassed by the XL's, for example, on piste. But then I'd say that the XL has a pretty good impression of a dedicated slalom/GS ski. I rate the edge hold on hardpack of the XL just shy of the Stockli SC and SL skis so are out front amongst most of this bunch.
My opinion is that there are plenty better skis now. In their day we loved them but 5 years on is a long time in ski design.

As always, its where you prefer to ski. If you want more float in chopped/soft snow against good edge then pick something like an 8000 which is also handy in moguls.
If you want even more float go wider but expect to have to make a compromise somewhere. Its a question of how much can you live with the downside of the ski in the conditions you want to ski it some of the time....

Its forever been that way...which is why we get so many of these type threads.... noone has cracked it yet IMV

Dear all..sorry for upsetting people about Line skis..I was joking.

I do realise that actually they were bought by Karhu and shipped the production line to China- which is why you can find them on ebay- fr sale in Shanghi.

Reactor bindings are definately imaginary- apart from a couple of pairs in Proctor Jones they are very hard to find- also someting to do with China and SARS......

However ..it was still impossible to get a pair of Prophet 80s in time for January but I'm not sure I want to buy things made in a tyrannical country with a horrid human rights record.

Re K2 public emenies- (also now made in China)- I had exactly the same experience as Nick Zotov- except on Trolles in Tignes- straight back for different skis. Razz Razz

I can't vouch for the Prophet 80 or 100, they look good on paper but that's all I know.

The Prophet 130s are awesome. Shame it's so soft, I'd use it for more than just a powder ski.

The Prophet 100s have stingers down them so they should be much stiffer, I think that would be a great ski.

Dont buy skis from China on ebay, they are all scams. Nothing to do with the factory being there, they are cloned ads!

parlor, i have the old Assassin MTX Pro at 80mm which is basically the Prophet 80 with a different graphic (I think). They're really quite stiff because of the titanium on them and need to be skied pretty hard to deliver. With a bit of agression they really rock.

Personally, I'm lazy, so I prefer by Motherships, even on piste.

Oh, and edsilva, the reactors DO exist. They get a pretty bad rap from lots of people but mine have been fine, i.e. released when required and stayed solid when necessary. That said, they do weigh about 33 million tonnnes Shocked

Hmmm, freeride skis. Nordica Hot Rod Eliminator, Bandit B2, Volkl Karma, AC3, AC4, K2 Recon, Outlaw or Seth, Dynastar Legend 8000, Head Mojo 80 or Monster 77, Scott Aztec Pro or Santiago Mission, Stockli Stormrider XL... So many skis, so little time.

Reactors? Think they don't exist now, even if they did last year.

fallliner, how do you get to have 'Seth' in the same sentance as B2?

Reactors have been discontinued. Line will refund the cost of the bindings if you did buy them. Some of their current skis are being made without plates for Reactor bindings. It would be nice if they continue the research, it's a great concept.

I tried some k2 public enemy's in val disere last week, bear in mind I am only a level 5-6 skier and normally ski a volkl 4* supersport as I weigh around 150lbs. I found them pretty decent on-piste. They weigh about twice as much as my volkls. Straight line stability is great, they dont twitch at all, however skiing them all day on piste I found them a bit too much work by the end of the day. They are pretty stiff which makes me think they would be difficult off-piste and in the bumps especially. Volkl karmas are supposed to be a good powder specialist. I think the b2s are a little skiny to really be a true all-mountain ski , surely they are now more 70% piste 30% off.
On my bus from lyon airport I heard people raving about b2s. One guy pulls something out of his bag and the rest are like "ohh whats that," to which he replies "its a transceiver." rolling eyes Guys go on at the rep asking if they can get any ski they want, she replies yes, they respond with, wait for it. "I want some B2 Bandits. "Ohhh are those the cool new blue ones, I'l have some of them too" Sad

Edmundh009, [ski pedant] the Karma is stiffer than the PEs, which you thought might be stiff for the powder ("pretty stiff which makes me think they would be difficult off-piste"), yet describe the Karma as a good powder specialist. [/ski pedant]

FWIW I like a stiff ski when skiing powder. Wish my powder skis were stiffer then I could ski them more often... Sad

Y'all.

Was in Saalbach-Hinterglemm over New Year - the snow was awesome - fresh deep powder ...
We hired out some Salomon Pocket Rockets for a day and did the whole day full-on from the very first lift right to the end - thought my legs were gonna drop off by the end.
I found the Rockets awesome - floated well in deep snow and they carved really well on-piste which surprised me!
We had em in length 165 - reckon next time I'd go for 175.

I'm not sure if Salomon do the Pocket rockets anymore - can't see em on their website - does anyone know? (altho I see em for sale elsewhere on the web)

I've also no idea how they compare to any of these other skis mentioned here - its quite a number & I don't have much experience with powder skis - my normal skis are the Fischer World cup slalom Carvers which are great but very stiff & I don't feel so comfortable on them off-piste.
Anyone have anything to say on that?

The guy in the shop in Saalbach also recommended the Atomic Metrons but we didnt get a chance to try em ...

Best
Steve
