Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Video Editing Software

This thread could also have been titled "Windows Movie Maker is a total piece of s**t, please recommend something that actually works"...

I'm a couple of hours into editing down my footage from the eosb, coming back to it today I loaded up Movie Maker, which took an awful long time to get started and read all the footage, then decided to only play me a black screen. This is the second time it's done this to me, and I hereby vow the last.

I did look around at other video editing software, but not knowing what I'm doing it's kind of hard to compare and a bit bewildering. So I was using Movie Maker out of a combination of laziness/ cheapness.

So, can anyone recommend some decent video editing software. Ideally I want something with all the features of move maker (which I guess is pretty basic!) - ease of use would be a big plus (I'm a technical IT type person but know nothing about video editing). Image stabilisation is essential, as the the ability to adjust the colour balance (whatever the technical term is), ability to add titles, captions and music is also required (and I guess fairly standard). Also could do with the ability to slo-mo / freeze frame for crashes! The one thing I'd really like that movie maker doesn't have is the ability to make notes against each clip which aren't visible in the final edit but would help me remember where each clip is (e.g. I could add a note saying which Piste / Day / SHs as I take snippets out of the raw footage - which would help me later when i edit it all together). I'm not looking to do anything very clever or time consuming.
I'm running Windows 7 on a reasonably good laptop. I won't be doing much video editing so cheapness is also a major consideration

Thanks in advance for any suggestions (except any that involve buying a Mac rolling eyes )

@Tubaski, give OpenShot a go on Linux - works a treat on Mint. I run it native and also via Virtualbox on Win7 and Win10 without any problems.

I use GoPro studio which is free to download (because I have a GoPro and don't know any better). I presume you can upload any .mp4 or .mov file to it. Its pretty intuitive, but there are plenty of YouTube video tutorials on it.

Funny that: I've just finished editing some movies in WMM (converting .mov to .mp4) with no problem at all. IMHO it's one of the best free Movie editors around.

I think there were problems with older versions of the WMM software, so I would suggest uninstalling then downloading and reinstalling the latest version.

I was just using WMM:2012 build 16.4.3522.0110, and was then prompted to download the latest version which is build 16.4.3528.0331

@geoffers, Same version as me, and I think that was the version I initially installed - may well be something else in my PC environment or drivers it isn't playing nicely with, or something about the source files...

I'd upgrade the OS to the current version and try then. I can't remember when win 7 was released, but there's been a lot of new stuff in video recently and it sounds like you may not have the codecs you need. You can probably retrofit them, but that's not what I'd do. I didn't think Movie Maker still existed - if it does I doubt it has support for newer codecs. The GoPro app may be a better choice, or anything else you care to run. I think most people use Premiere Pro, available on both Windows and Apple.

I use the latest version in Windows 7 and "acceptable" would be my take on things. It can string a few bits of video together, crop clips and do other limited stuff but you are not going to be winning an academy award. The interface is okay. Virtualdub is better than movie maker for some stuff. It is true that on Windows the free side of video editing is pretty shitty.

kdenlive on Linux is much better.

I use GoPro Studio on Windows 10, the PC is a fairly decent spec intended for gaming so generally does quite well. Have had some issues with Studio crashing though, have just learnt to regularly save the project and be patient when trying to load it again. DOwnside is that the conversion from GoPro clip to usable clip is time consuming and takes up space on the hard drive. Even with 1TB I end up deleting source video or the clips (once the 'movie' is finished) to save space, am considering a larger external drive to take the added strain.
