Poster: A snowHead
|
We got back from Norway last Sunday where the conditions had been ice and then slush. I've had a pain in my shin area of one leg all week that improved on Wednesday then went downhill Thursday onwards. My leg was swelling so I got checked out. My gp also thought it was hot to the touch so referred me to A and ad as she thought it may be a dvt. An excruciating blood test and X-ray have ruled everything synester out. I still have the pain in my leg and am not sure of the best way to proceed. It feels like someone is kicking my shin with every step. I had my boots slightly looser this time and skii'd the best ever which was wierd given that the conditions weren't brilliant.
Sorry for the ramble, but does anyone have any thoughts? Cheers.

Apart from getting a better spell checker, nope. Weird.

@bambionskiis,
Is it calf swelling and lower leg pain -it's sounds like it is if they were checking for DVT?

Sounds like normal spring skiing! Glad the skiing went well, @bambionskiis, but sorry to hear about the leg.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you have seen GP /A&E with normal Xray and DVT excluded, I would go back to your GP and or see a physio. Could be a number of diagnoses including tendonitis (pain worse on bending ankle and may feel creaking) inflamed muscles, a bone bruise, a stress fracture (not apparent on initial xray ) etc ...

Spell check won't help with the garbage I write UANN, but sound advice anyway.
It's only the front of the leg (the shin bone area) JB and not the calf which was why I wasn't worried but my doctor said "it can happen anywhere". Yoiks. It was good they were so thorough, but I kept saying I didn't think that was what the problem was. Thank god, it wasn't.
I wondered if it was just spring skiing Pam (not getting any younger and all that). I think on reflection though it was just POOR skiing. lol
I do think you are correct retsil and I will look into physio. The pain is worse when I bend my ankle (replicating the position of when it's in a ski boot/skiing position) and it does creak. I'm lucky enough to have been able to rest and elevate it for two days, and it definitely feels better today than it has done for the last week. It's doing my head in as I hate sitting around and would rather exercise my way out of it but wouldn't want to do the wrong thing.
Thanks all for your help.

FWIW. If I was in your position, I would like to get the opinion of a Podiatrist.

If you put your palm on the painful area and you can feel creaking (crepitus) as you flex/extend your ankle than it is tendonitis. Will usually settle with rest from the provoking activity, anti-inflammatories etc..Need to look at the specific cause why you get it skiing. Boot/foot beds etc..If you are not sure about your diagnosis go see a professional.

I was once persuaded (against my inclination) to try out some new boots, and these must have pressed in the wrong place on my shin or something like that, because I had severe shin pain for the rest of my holiday (about 2 days) and had to remain pedestrian (pain wasn't too bad in street shoes).
It could be that the conditions (if unusual for you) may have caused you to shift to an unusual posture that meant your boots pressed into part of your shin, and thence caused the pain.
So, I'd suggest trying different boots that have a better fit - can spread pressure more evenly across your shin area should you lean forward into them.

By coincidence I have to take my daughter to a podiatrist soon, so I will discuss with him when I do OF, thanks.
Retsil and crosbi; both spot on I believe. I do think that I was just skiing differently because of the conditions. I wasn't having a problem with the ice, just the slush and as it was slushy in the later afternoons (when I was perhaps a bit tired) I may not have altered my skiing to suit the different conditions. It's something I will have to look at more closely for next year. Also, I was thinking about getting new boots, so may act on this for next year. It's difficult because it may just have been that having them not done up so tightly (they can dig in) my ankle and foot had too much "freedom". Cheers

@bambionskiis, I've had a lot of problems with my shins and I swear by Booster straps, I think they're nothing short of miraculous. Of course, I have no idea if they are what you need and they aren't cheap bought new, but still worth mentioning

That's great moseyp, thanks. I've just had a look at them and they seem really good, so I'll give them a try.

Sounds like shin splints to me. Get an ice pack on there. If you can tape it, tape it. It'll add extra support and help prevent further damage if you have to be on it.

You know it makes sense.

That type of pain is typically shin splints, but if it's on the lower portion and/or sides, it could also be tibialis anterior tendonitis (or posterior). My boyfriend just dealt with this.
