Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Muscle Spasm

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Return from a glorious week in Austria last Saturday with no falls and no injuries. Went to pick up my handbag yesterday on my way to work and felt an almighty pain in my back and couldnt move. A visit to the docs resulted in pain killers - Diazapan, anti inflam, paracetamol and lots of rest as they reckoned it was a muscle in spasm. Could this be due to the weeks skiing as i didnt visit the gym much before hand, any one else suffered from this? Oow It really hurts.

I had one of these the day before I went trekking in Africa. Very nasty. Sheer pain for a second or two, and then numbness, legs giving out and leaving me in a heap in the floor. My GP said pretty much the same thing - muscle spam, anything could have caused it.

Hard luck. I'm no doctor, but it's probably just the weight of the handbag, nothing to do with skiing. After a week's respite from hauling it about, you should have worked up to it gradually, starting with bags of flour (or sugar), moving on to sacks of spuds, boulders, small cars, before going for the big one and lifting the handbag.

Snowbird, head off to see the osteopath near you (the one up at Vigo) He'll fix the spasm for you . he's highly recommended by our neighbours, he lives round the corner from us.

Snowbird, Try weighing your handbag. It will be full of cash due to the vast cheapness of your late deal. Muscle spasms are very painful. Hopefully it wont have been triggered by a trapped nerve.

Picking things up is just like skiing -bend zee knees.

Years ago we had spent 2 days moving pianos up and down stairs for a university music department. The next week I was laid up for a week when my back went picking up the milk off the front door step (remember milk deliveries). Massage can be very relaxing for the back.

Snowbird, Oooh poor you, I have had this several times in the past. Once my back went at a petrol station, I lifted the pump from its holder and PING it had gone. I haven't had a back problem for about 5 yrs now, I have never seen a specialist but I used to go to yoga once a week and I now stretch a couple of times per week, but that could just be coincidence. Confused

IncogSkiSno, Laughing Laughing ditto, ended up trapped between the pump and the car. Others thought it hilarious. Eventually had to get my self up, went & piad, wasn't till they saw my pale white face covered in sweat that they felt guilty about not getting out of the car to help. My wife still cries with laughter when telling this story. Back pain is worse than earache.

Surely that would depend on what sort of earache you're referring to wink

My workmate had something similar - he used to be a scaffolder and had some serious muscle imbalances in his back. At one time he had a spasm so severe that the Dr had to come out and inject him with morphine. Since changing jobs he has been quite a bit better in this regard.

Snowbird, no Kevin Kirkup, up at Vigo somewhere (NorthEast Osteopathic and Sports Injury Clinic), my father-in-law was an osteopath and sold him his manipulation couch when he retired. The sooner you go, the sooner your back will be better.

My non-expert, amateur, four pennyworth....keep moving, as much as possible, up to, but not through the point of pain. If you rest you risk seizing up. Suggest you check out Pilates classes when you get back, and go see that Osteopath, soon Smile

Snowbird, I hope it wasn't the exercises you and Paul have been doing at my suggestion!! Shocked Shocked Laughing Seriously - Osteopath asap regardless, stretch every day just a bit, but ask the Osteo what stretches. Yoga would probably be better than Pilates for this problem. IMO.

well i am back and feel amazingly good Madeye-Smiley I have been twisted into positions i didnt think possible, I am remarkably suprised at how good i now feel, i was told however that i may feel like i've done a round or two with Mike Tyson from tonight / tomorrow but then should start to feel better, I have another session on Monday to be streched out again, the osteopath confirmed my lower back left muscle is indeed in spasm but he also identified that my hamstrings were extreemly tight so he showed me some excercises to do to loosen them up, He suprised me by showing me how the muscles in the back legs and abdonimum area are connected as i have had pain in my abdonimum area too and this is proably all related,
overall i am extreemly pleased i went along, thanks for all your advise snowheads, snowHead

scottydog, your weight loss is a good inspiration for Mr M, I will take note of what underwear he wears from now on, infact i might try to pursued him to go commando wink

Snowbird, well done. My friend who I am skiing with next weekend has a similar issue, so will tell him to make a run/hobble for the osteopath.

When I got close to gold I was trying everything to lose the last pound, found the lightest t-shirt I could, wore sandals so socks werent required. Did the trick!

Paul Mason, as dad in law was an osteopath, and hubby was always having back trouble with squash etc ,I have only too often seen the miraculous effects of a trip to the osteopath. he's actuallt a neighbour, although we have never needed his services ourselves, other neighbours have commented on how good he was.
