Mrs AAT is suffering from Achilles Tendinitis, which first became apparent after a skiing fall in Chamonix. However I suspect its more a reflection of her running and fell running addiction.
Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for rehabbing this ? The physio has been somewhat disappointing and not very forthcoming with information or exercises. He's mostly been massaging the calf and tendon and prescribed a few (3 sets of 10 per day) heal lifts.
Ta.

Potentially chronic & serious. One can get shockwave treatment to trigger a more effective healing process, but even then it's not a 'quick fix'. See as many specialists as you have time & money for.

I had it around ten years ago from skiing. Went to a very good physo who after the acute phase had me doing stretching and strengthening excercises. Can't remember exactly what they were but I think it was some new Aussie regime. What I do remember is that the reps were huge, something like 4/80. I think spyderjon might have had it on his site once. Worked for me.

Second thoughts, it might have been on solutions4feet website but I can't see it there now.

The main things for it are rest, gentle massage or manipulation and heel-lifts to avoid it getting too "sticky". Once it's out of the acute phase you can have ultrasound on it as well. It's a hugely frustrating injury. She might find that heel pads/ raised in her shoes will help take some of the strain off as well. But in my experience, all of the above plus time are the only way it will go.

Iv heard massaging gel insoles are good for Achilles tendonitis.. don't know what they would be like in skii boots though.

@AndAnotherThing.., commiserations, it can be a real PITA. For me what helped...really good physio, ultrasound, manipulation, exercises. Podiatrist for orthotics for all shoes. Footbeds for ski boots. Medi-dyne prostretch device on recommendation of Spyderjon. And finally a nightsplint which was really tough to wear, kept me awake, but really helped. I was going to try acupuncture which helped a friend of mine. Good luck to her

Yep, it's proving to be a long drawn out and frustrating affair.
I didn't realise that skiing could cause it as well. Does anyone know the mechanism which causes the problem ?

@AndAnotherThing.., for me the cause was bad alignment, overpronation over a long period of time. Achilles was being twisted like wringing out a wet cloth, that's how it was described to me. Skiing always helped me due to putting a stretch on the Achilles from being in the boots so much.

@AndAnotherThing.., yes, if she runs a lot hasn't she already been through all that and has orthotics?

@sarah, I don't think so. Although she has had coaching sessions she's not had specific sessions on that.

A quick question in hope - is skiing likely to aggravate it ? We're hoping to score a weeks spring skiing week next..

If you are looking for a good podiatrist - I know Chester isn't too far from you - Peter Colhoun comes highly recommended by our foot surgeon - and he's fitted orthotics to most of the Chester Triathlon ironman competitors and nearly all the local marathon runners...
I've not had to use him myself but everyone I know who has is pretty happy with the results...

Still sore, but have been out on the bike a couple of times this week and as long as I don't need to unclip my right foot I'm on a roll!

@AndAnotherThing.., I personally found that skiing was great for it! The Achilles felt really comfy in the ski boot and it didn't seem to be exacerbated by skiing - although I did only have quite mild tendonitis. I was recovering from a bout of it when I had my ski boots fitted, and the fitters did bear this in mind - I hadn't thought to tell them at first, then mentioned it in passing and got told off for not having said anything before! It was a few years ago now so I can't remember what they actually did to the boots...
Mine was also caused by running, probably increasing mileage too quickly when I first started - it hasn't returned for a few years now (touch wood). It was cured by rest from running (frustrating though that was) and exercises (calf raises, stretches, etc) - and I'm now a lot more careful about upping mileage too drastically.

@k, Any news on skiing ? I'm guessing not !
@catclaires, That's good news on both counts. Her not being able to run is not ideal

Physio upto three to four months . Avoid gadgets. It's slow to recover.

Resistance exercises using bands are good for just about every injury you can possible get, as rebuilding back stregth is what rehab is all about.

@thesnowiscoming, There is dispute on the benefits of strengthening for this issue, depending on who you pay your money too.
To follow on, even getting a confirmed diagnosis has been difficult with a difference of opinion between several physios. After 6 months away from running she's returned to running, less so fell running, and is stretching lots which gives relief. Arguably not fixed though.

I had some chronic pains in my legs after preparing for and running the Jungfrau Marathon in 2012. One day my wife read an article detailing how soaking in an Epsom Salts bath can help with such injuries. I was deeply sceptical but tried two or three, 20-30 minutes at a time, and it worked. It's worth a try, I'd suggest, but having experienced Achilles problems myself in the past, prolonged rest is the best treatment.

Stretches for the foot, calf and ankle and gentle self massage, with a drop in running mileage solved mine quite quickly.
