I am visiting Arc 1950 for the first time in a few weeks (have normally done St Anton / Val). A few questions if anyone can help (and apologies if these have been discussed before - first visit to snowheads as well):
1. Is it worth doing the full Paradiski ski pass thing or is the trip over to La Plagne not worth the effort (looks like it's a few chairs up to La Plagne the other side)?
2. Any take on the apres-ski at 1950? If we want a good night out, do we need to go to 1800?
3. Good places for lunch on the slopes - any suggestions?

L10, welcome to snowHeads!
1. It is very quick and easy to get to La Plagne from Les Arcs. From Arc 1950 two fast chairlifts and a 20 minute ski will see you at the Vanoise Express cablecar that links to La Plagne. You'll then have plenty of time to explore that side of the Paradiski domain before you need to head back to 1950. Last week I skied to the far side of LP (the Champagny area) for some terrific skiing and still had plenty of time before heading back to Arc 1800. There is, of course, a large and varied ski area in Les Arcs, but if covering a lot of miles is what you like to do, the Paradiski domain gives you endless opportunity to do this. If you don;'t want to commit to a full Paradiski pass, you can buy daily extensions to your Les Arcs pass.
2. No personal experience of the apres-ski in 1950, but they have several more bars, restaurants and a nightclub open this season, so I guess it's at least OK. If it is a bot quiet for you, there is a pedestrian friendly lift up to Arc 2000 which stays open in the evening. Getting to 1800 from 1950 after dark is two bus rides (you need to change at Arc 1600), so probably isn't your best option for socialising.
3. L'Arpette (just above 1600) is good (self-service or table service), Chalet de L'Arc (just above Arc2000) is probably the nicest full service restaurant in Les Arcs, La Ferme in Villaroger is also very nice (and authentically Savoyarde, even if I did have kangaroo in there recently). L'Alpage in the Chantel part of 1800 is nice, and a bit out of the way so can be a good bet if other places are busy. I'm sure other people will chip in with suggestions.

I'd wondered whether this was possible. I know you can get to the Vallandry and Grizzly lifts by skiing across and past Arc 1800, but does this take you to the Vanoise Express?

If you stay above the mid station of Trans Arc from the top of Arpettes (? Villards I think) then across the blue track, without diving off down the red of L'ours or Petit L'Ours in the breaks in the woods, (which as you say , head to Vallandry) then yes, you can make it.
Dullish, but perfectly possible!

yes that's it.
But as I said in the original post, you have to know that Peisey is where you are headed, because it very easy to drop too low too early on this route, if you lose concentration (or see some powder / bumps that you just have to try...!)

yes eaten there a couple of times last season with other owners. Wasn't a terribly exciting menu - a lot of Ham products, and variations thereof (you'd be surprised at just how many ways you can do Jambon...), but what was on offer was good quality, reasonable service and well presented. Difficult to get a table without pre-booking, so obviously popular. But definitely not for veggies.
As per Bungle , Casa is the place we tend to go - I particularly like the fact that as owner you get a free aperitif So when you forget to book... phone throuigh the "Pizza to go" order to eat back in the apartment, and then when you pop upstairs to collect, there's a beer waiting for you while they finish off. Works for me!

no, not yet. The family trip isn't until March. I am however out there on Sat (ah-ha) for 4 days, back Weds, and I do need to see him about what to do with Wilks minor ( 4 yrs old, so small, but 2 weeks on skis, so better thann '1950 nursery'), so will do what I can to investigate on your behalf.

JimW, you lucky *&#!$ - after the heart stopping tension of last year waiting for the snow we decided to go a week later this year and up until Saturday it was the right decision - now its not but it might be again this time next week!! - I mailed Vincent last night suggesting we meet in the pub on the afternoon I arrive so hopefully that should do the trick!! Have a great four days...

Just a quick answer to question no 3 - definitely try Chalet de L'Arc for lunch - make sure you try the dish which is basically a huge loaf of bread with a dinner cooked inside it. It is a challenge to eat one on your own, but it can be done!!

12:30 onwards it shall be. Likely to be wearing a bright orange baseball cap - possibly not the most stylish, but certainly the most visible when leading a gang or family around the mountain
Directions from Hotel Vanoise as per other thread - is that the road under the Vanoise Express, towards the tourist office on the bend? (its been a while since I've been off skis in PP... as you can probably tell).

[b JimW/b] your memory is slightly askew! When you are descending towards Plan peisey, make sure you ski the last part underneath the 6 man chair. This way you cannot miss the Vanoise Hotel (which is ABOVE the Vanoise Express) Leave the piste as if you are visiting the hotel,take off your skis and walk downhill behind the hotel towards the shops. You cannot miss the Flying Squirrel which is the second establishment on your right, just past a ski shop. You can't miss it!
