Hi,
We are heading out to Les Arcs 1950, Le village on Saturday.
Does anyone know if it's ok for men to wear swim shorts in the pool? or does it have to be speedos?
Any info would be appreciated.

As far as I know, all public pools in France insist men wear budgie smugglers. A few years ago my then teenage son decided he'd rather not swim on our summer holiday than comply!

Not my experience. For example the Lagon complex in Tignes is quite happy with swim shorts.

@dodgy knees, I always take a pair of both types. My third variant currently out of action with a hole in one elbow but usually accepted.
I always used to take a silly rubber hat too but they don't seem to insist on these nowadays.
The swim shorts and budgie smugglers also handy on piste in warm afternoon slush.

@RobW, is right, it seems to be a local thing. Tignes definitely fine, but this week there has been a proliferation of tight swimwear

Tight shorts usually OK, not only the very brief briefs. Pools usually have some to hire

Mille 8 is in arc 1800 and therefore the rules that apply there will not be relevant to the pools at the residences at Arc 1950.
I can't remember the rules at Arc 1950 so would say take your Speedos in case shorts aren't allowed.

It doesn't have to be Speedo briefs, thought - Daniel Craig style trunks are usually acceptable - they just can't be baggies.

I have swum at 1950 for the last 11 years both summer and winter seasons, and have NEVER worn anything but standard baggies swimwear. Which pool were you in @Yellow Pyranha ?

@Arctic Roll, that was a comment on the rule generally prevailing at French pools, rather than specifically at les Arcs. They normally want people in skin tight swimwear because of the hygiene risk (fear) related to people wearing baggies other than for swimming. It has been discussed on here before so it must still be a 'thing' - I read somewhere that Grenoble was the first place to introduce the rule, back in the late eighties or early nineties. Perhaps it's more prevalent in municipal pools, but less so in privately owned ones.
As I said in a previous thread, it seems a little strange to have this rule for outdoor pools given that they can't do much about dust, leaves and bird droppings, but they certainly had this rule in Samoens a few Summers ago.
Oh, and I think we managed with baggies in Avoriaz a couple of years ago, but that's not a pool for swimming, really. And on a campsite in Britanny. So I agree that, although the no-baggies rule is widespread, it is not universal. Still, tighties are better for actually swimming

@Yellow Pyranha, fairy nuff.
Occasionally (and even more occasionally, attractively) there is the "to hell with shorts at all" option exercised in the jacuzzis, saunas and steam rooms in 1950, which can come as a bit of a shock to us uptight Brits, and creates a certain amount of schoolboy giggling after the event.
