Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Strax, how about a straightforward apology rather than slinging more generalised insults around, which comes across as very defensive?

@Logan, Don't worry, all of us have physical limitations of one sort or another. With blokes it can be a solid yard of lard around t'middle . . . and occasionally the solid boulder of bone t'ween ears . . . but what really helps is just improving your flexibility. It doesn't take much effort to begin stretching, there's plenty of on-line guidance. Even better is a couple of yoga classes a week, which, if you desire it may assist in squeezing the pear.
As for instruction . . . I can't begin to describe how wrong that was!!!
Please persevere, it does get easier . . . especially when you get some decent instruction.
At the same time it's not contrary to learn to ski too. Both activities complement each other once you get beyond the bashing your bits on the hard stuff stage.
I would echo the 'it's easiest to get up from your toe side' comments, it is. So keep us informed of your progress Little Angel

@Strax, It's usually down to me to be crass and insensitive but even I tend to draw the line at body shaming people I've never met or seen. Yes, as a nation we do find ourselves on the well greased slope to morbid obesity. However, the on-line equivalent of walking up to a lass and calling her a fat, lazy slag whilst slapping her . . . requires an apology. . . NOW!

Anyway pear shaped is ideal for learning to snow board.

Saves buying crash pants or whatever they are called.

To get up facing downhill requires reasonable core strength and balance, and is actually easier on a steeper hill.

Yeah agreed that getting up is actually quite difficult sometimes and can be really energy sapping. The stronger your core is, the easier it is.

Logan, as others have said getting up on flat, nursery slopes is a pain no matter what's strapped to your feet. Skiing is possibly slightly easier to pick up initially, but if you want to be a snowboarder then I'd stick with it. During the MYAsH Bash (a snowheads trip in January) one of the guys in my room was boarding and had a really difficult time over the first 2 or 3 days. He fell quite a lot and felt he was getting nowhere, plus had problems on the lift. Most days when we got back I'd ask him how he'd got on and he'd be really down and list what had gone wrong. Then on one day I asked him and his face lit up with a huge smile and he listed everything that had gone right and how great snowboarding was and that he'd hardly fallen that day.

@Strax, other people have already pointed out, but thought I'd add for clarity, you sound like a ballbag. Your comments were needless, grounded in assumption and basically unpleasant.

Logan, by general opinion on here, I have offended you. I apologise unreservedly if my comments upset you. It was not my intention. I understand I misinterpreted your OP, and your fitness levels cannot be determined from the post you made.
I hope we're good now

@Logan, well done, rarely seen such a straightforward question spark such a wide ranging heated debate.
But are you struggling to get up to switch on your device to log on to your snowHeads thread since last Wednesday?

@Francium - I think I'll give that a try - I can do it kitesurfing but on Day #1 (today) of learning to board, I can only get up facing uphill (toe edge). Trying downhill (heel edge) doesn't work for me (board slips away when I try) unless I get (OP take note!) one foot in the bindings and then chop the snow into a step with the board and put the other foot on standing up.

It must be technique; I do sit-ups every night (feet off the floor, I can also do crunches with heavy weights and leg press much more than twice my body weight). For me, either my knee complains or the board does a runner - technique, it has to be. And I don't have it yet.

On the ski thing; my instructor was on neither most of the time (except when demonstrating). Odd using skis as you can't demonstrate but not quite convinced that the person is a fraud just for that.

On the "you should only do one thing" dangly bits - grow up. Try both, do both or pick a favourite - who cares? All I can say is as a hardened skiier, I am In Love with my snowboarding boots! Twisted Evil I'll give boarding a go and see how I feel. (Which at the moment is slightly sorry for my skiing brethren, for all the extra crap they have to carry and the hideous boots! wink )
