Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

'Fessing up - Shoulder this time

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I didn't want to lower the tone of the Gnarly but Nice in Gressoney thread last week, so didn't post about this, except on FB. Halfway through day two, at the end of a lovely morning skiing reds and blacks in fresh snow and sunshine, just as we were stopping for lunch I fell in a cart-wheely fashion and knew I was damaged cos I couldn't get up - my skis were still on and I was lying on my side on a shoulder that was feeling very wrong . Sad

Kindly fellow snowHeads came to the rescue in a flash, removed my skis and helped me get myself together and eventually back on my feet. After a short wobbly walk to the restaurant and a sit down, it was obvious that I needed more help than my lovely worried husband and friends could give, and Yoda went off to get the pisteurs sent down. They immobilized my shoulder, got me on the back of a skidoo for the short ride to the Frachey funival, took JohnQ and me down the mountain to a waiting ambulance and along to the clinic in Champoluc. Xrays showed a (slightly displaced) fracture and a couple of hairlines of the upper humerus, so I was trussed up in a 'sling and swathe', right side totally immobilized with my arm strapped across my body. All followed by a nearly two hour taxi ride back round the mountains and up to Gressoney.

The care and attitude of the mountain police, pisteurs and medics were excellent throughout. We didn't have a credit card on us but they were happy for us to pay later, and J skied back to Champoluc next day to settle up, and paid the mountain rescue bill in Gressoney.

I don't know why I fell, it was as if I 'high-sided', so I can only think I wacked an edge in too hard at the end of the run and must've been a bit back on my skis, which were a hired pair of Rossignol Soul 7s.

Appointment with my GP Monday afternoon to sort out what happens next ...

Thats bad luck, especially so early in the week. Hopefully it'll heal pretty quick and not need anything drastic doing if only slightly displaced.

@holidayloverxx, Are you looking for a gore fix again?

@RachelQ, you're at least the third pixie to sustain a shoulder injury, but I think you're way ahead in terms of severity and technicolour. Please get better soon. xx

Ouch @RachelQ, that looks really sore! Bet it's uncomfortable at night too Sad Have you been seen since you've been back & any idea of a plan yet? (Other than strong meds!) wink When upright, try & hold your back straight or it will start to feel painful too. I hope you heal fast!x

@RachelQ, Ouch indeed - feel for you.
I did much the same thing on 31 Jan this year - heli-ride down from Verbier to Sion hospital - fractured tuberosity (head of humerus) and fully dislocated so the head was in my armpit pinching the nerves and paralysing my hand and arm. 6 weeks on and I've still got tingling and numb fingers but my bruise was nowhere near as impressive as yours. I'd broken the same shoulder 8 years previously but no dislocation that time - heli-ride down from Grand Montets to Cham hospital. Range of motion has been kick-started by physio and all healing well.
What made a real difference to me was the physio breaking up and dispersing the scar tissue around the break - super painful but it freed up movement each time.
The first 2 weeks were the worst with no prospect of ever returning to normal but reassured that I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Good luck with your recovery and I will raise a glass or two to you when I'm in Champoluc relaxed spring skiing in 2.5 weeks - April (trip cleared by consultant and actively persuading physio - taken delivery of shoulder support...;o)

I saw my GP late yesterday and he was going to call the fracture clinic this morning, but not heard anything yet rolling eyes
@genepi, yes it's very uncomfortable at night and I'm going to try going to bed propped up to try and get some sleep, and tell me about the back ache! it's nearly as bad as the shoulder.
@Grinning, more ouch for you - I can't begin to imagine a dislocation as well Shocked Good to hear you're healing well, and enjoy Champoluc - it's special snowHead

That, or try putting a couple of pillows under your elbow.

The best, I'm told, is a recliner chair.

While pain killer is generally advised to be avoided for minor pain, many doctors (and patients) found it help getting some rest at night. It's a balancing act. The body is usually amazing in healing itself. But it won't be able to if you don't sleep.

Quick update: appointment at the fracture clinic at last this morning, xrays and saw the consultant, who is happy with the way the fracture is healing (I was a bit nervous as the doc in Italy thought it was slightly displaced). No more need for the wrap-around restraining device I've had to wear since the accident, just a lightweight sling now, and some exercises to do. You've no idea how wonderful this is - I can wear normal clothes again and actually wiggle my arm into a sleeve Very Happy
