Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alpine Downhill Race in St Moritz - should I buy tickets?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi Everyone. I am lucky enough to be skiing in St. Moritz the week of March 13, in which the final FIS races for the season take place. I am thinking of buying tickets to the Downhill race which is on Wednesday, March 16. I have never been to a race in person, only seen them on TV. The tickets are expensive, the cheapest starting at 31 CHF. I am deliberating whether to buy tickets. I don't want to sit at the finish line - it seems that if you are there, all you see is the skiers as they finish the race and everything else will be on a large screen. I would much prefer to stand strategically somewhere along the course. My question is - do you need a ticket to do that? or perhaps so long as I have a ski pass I can just ski down parallel to the course and find a spot?

Being Switzerland and in particular St Moritz, you may find there are no slopeside viewpoints, purely from a ticketing p.o.v.

TBH, entertainments aside, skiing like F1 is a TV sport unless you're participating.

you wont need tickets unless your trying to get into the finish area. Just take the lift up & ski down with all the others to the slopeside viewing areas. Then continue down to different parts of the course.

Compared to the average footie match 31 CHF isn't expensive. The finish area is worth it IMHO because of the atmosphere, the commentary and the big screen, as well as seeing the athletes finishing. The problem with anywhere else is they just whizz past and you don't know who they are, even if you recognise the country from the race suit. You also don't know if they actually finish or what position. Yes, you can follow it on your phone in real time (FIS live timing) but then you'll probably miss the racer going past!

Also, if you can get there without skiing, it's a lot more comfortable standing about for hours in walking boots than ski boots.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We watched the WC races here in Wengen in January. It's definitely worth buying tickets for the finish area. Atmosphere is great, big screens so you can see the split times like you do on TV at home. If there's a VIP option you should take that too as they'll have a bbq going.

And don't forget your Swiss flag Very Happy
