Despite what the piste maps say, I have been reliably informed (by others on here) that Avoriaz is actually only 100m higher than Chatel.
I went in January (first time there), and thought it was good. Although I stayed down the road in La Chapelle D'Abondance, so can't really tell you much about the village as I barely went there.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@mikeycharlton, you mean the skiing or the village?
@Markab1971, as good as anywhere for Easter.

Just like Val Thorens is actually only 300m higher than Brides Les Bains?

We went to chatel last Easter and really enjoyed it. We stayed a little down in the main village, had to go up some steps and up in the car park lift. Be careful where you stay as Chatel is on a slope (far more than morzine or Les gets).
Cheap, our Appartment was 500 euro for the week.
Chatel is a nice village, not too busy. We ended up taking the bus to pre la Jeux every day, some of the local slopes had closed (petit Chatel). Bus was very efficient.
We did have a lot of rain, which worried us. They did do a fab job keeping the slopes in good condition, with only the bottom getting very slushy.
We are staying in morzine for Easter this year, and will probably ski pre la Joux a lot again.

Just returned from a week in Châtel. Snow excellent. The best all round resort of the Châtel area is probably Pre la Joux; it was certainly the most crowded and with the most snow.
Avoriaz would mean you need the full PDS lift pass which is much more expensive.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We boarded from La Chapelle -> Torgon, Super-Chatel, Chalet-Neuf, Morgins and back today (10:30am -14:00).
Other than a pisteur yelling at me to get out of the way of a 30m wide-slide when in the off-piste next to the Croix run ( turned out to be mainly big death-biscuits, as the slide broke up), it was really nice corn snow. Some skiers were finding it a bit heavy going on the sun-soaked Corbeau sector of Morgins, but otherwise - sweet.

What's the best area for a beginner boarder in Porte du soleil , we looked on you tube at the pre la joux area and the 3k green run looked quite narrow and flat in places ( not good for other half ) are there any good wide beginners area s to practice linking turns ?

You know it makes sense.
|
@Markab1971, there are plenty of shortish gentle runs at the top of the Super Chatel bubble.
The 3k green in Pre la Joux that you mention is not really ideal for learning on. It's essentially a narrow mountain road, although it is a nice leisurely cruise (on ski's, probably not on a board) through the trees.

in PdS try the plateau at St Jean D'Aulps Station, the drag lift next to Pierre Longue at pre la Joue, the drag at the top of the Ardent Bubble. The drags in Champoussin, The slopes next to the La Chapelle Park in Avoriaz, Proclou, Serrasaix
Theres a few to be getting on with
