Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mid March - resorts accesible from Munich or Milan

 Poster: A snowHead

Looking at doing a few days DIY ski trip and a few days city break so looking for advise on resorts accessible from Munich or Milan. Probably going to book flights soon but pick the resort closer to the time, but involves making a call between Austria and Italy! Think we'd perfer to do Italy - but gather snow hasn't been great in Italy this year and don't know the resorts so wondering if should just play safe and go to Munich or is anywhere in Italy looking good and high enough to last into mid March?

Either way, does anyone have any recommendations for resorts to keep an eye on that would be accessible from Munich or Milan that should still have good snow by March, particularly if snow isn't great at present?

cant really go wrong with the Zillertal Valley so Mayrhofen or Zell am Ziller with bus links to Hintertux for the Glacier if the snow is really crap, but given that snowbombing is the 2nd week in April this year history would say it will be fine.

its also currently chucking it down with snow just now so the snow pack should be in good condition for a while.

If you're thinking Italy then Aosta valley should be fine; Courmayeur has more than enough coverage at the moment and should be absolutely fine in March.

So we've booked flights to Munich and will be arriving on 16th March - was looking at some of the recommended resorts for Spring skiing, however accommodation prices seem to be outrageous for the likes of Lech, Solden, Iscgal, Obergurgal or St. Anton.

Nothing in any of those is less that €1k for 5 nights, and most places are well above that. Mayrhofen seems a bit more reasonable but have been there before so was hoping for somewhere new. Is there anywhere more reasonable priced accommodation can be booked or are these just the prices for those resorts?

Or any recommendations for another option? looking for somewhere sufficiently high to hold snow (have skied Soll in March before and never again!!!) and want somewhere with reasonable apres.

Thanks for help!

Also should say mainly interested in reds, not going to be doing many blacks or off-piste if that makes a difference.

Hi
We are going to Munich on the 17th and are stopping in Flachau and whilst it's a 2 hour transfer there seems to be plenty of affordable accomodation.
We have booked a double room each for EUR 77.00 b&b incl single supplement at a hotel right on the slopes.
Obviously you don't get the insurance of a readily accessible glacier but the snow is a not bad 60 / 140 cms and they look to be expecting a further 40 / 50 cms this week.
Good luck

I was going to recommend the villages of Klostertal like Langen, Klosterle, Wald am Arlberg, Dalaas which have plenty of reasonable accommodation and if you have a car, have easy access up to Stuben & Zurs to ski the Arlberg East & West, as well as the local Sonnenkopf area...but they are very quiet of an evening.

Maybe stay in Kappl or See and you can commute to Ischgl...and its apres...though you won't be indulging in too much amber nectar if you're driving! wink

If you want...a big snowsure ski area, short walk to lifts and busy apres...it's unlikely to be cheap! snowHead

St Anton.

Plenty of rooms for <€800.

Or Hintertux.
