Hi folks,
One of our group got injured in Austria last week. We got them to the gondola and they were escorted down with ski patrol to a waiting private ambulance which took us to the local clinic where he got sorted.
Whilst I was there waiting a number of british + irish patients tried to flash the E111 card to avail of the same cover as you would get in your home eu state. Obviously given it was a private clinic it was cash only with a reclaim via your travel insurance which is fair enough.
The care my mate got was excellent and we had no problem paying whatsoever but I was wondering has anyone ever been offered public treatment or do they even accept ski injuries? Ie is it worth driving to a public hospital as you would for a standard injury?

Yes, people certainly get treated in public facilities in Austria. My son had a complex ankle fracture treated very well. It was a stupid tobogganing accident. But certainly in France the clinics in ski resorts are often private. if you have sensible insurance (and an EHIC) you shouldn't need to worry.

@Aviatork, depending on where you are the ambulance will take you to the clinic that pays it. The Red Cross or St John's ambulances (Rotes Kreuz or Johanniter) will take you to the public hospitals if you tell them to. You can also tell the First Aiders to have you transferred to a local doctor and not to a private clinic if you want. In the Gurgls and Sölden for example you are taken to the Medalp centre which is close to the Gaislachkoglbahn. They also have another centre in Mayrhofen which is fed by the rescue services unless you specify you don't want private treatment. I was treated at the Sölden clinic for example after asking for a place that could look at my knee after I had twisted it. They wanted my credit card details, nothing else, not even my insurance details - pay first, claim back later is their philosophy.

Yeah that was the same for us, cash up front (1100 EUR) hopefully the insurance pay up, but there is a large excess so who knows.
I'd been injured myself before in a off season ski resort in Austria during summer (shoulder dislocation kayaking) and was taken to the a+e and paid 100 EUR, same as I'd pay here at home but 10 hours less wait 
I just thought maybe in future that could be a better option for a small injury like this especially given we had a car.

@Aviatork, I was taken to the private clinic (accident in resort but not skiing). If the insurance had insisted on the public hospital I would have been transferred there. I didn't have to pay for the ambulance, it was settled directly
