My husband has just had a total replacement at 64 years of age. We stopped using actual skis about 12 years ago and now use Skibobs (small bike with skis and small skis on feet). These are classed by some as an adaptive way of getting down the mountain. We have always managed to find winter sport insurance for Austria in the past, explaining what a skibob was and we were covered. We aren't planning to go again until Feb 2017 but I thought I would test the water adding the knee replacement to our list of pre-existing conditions and not one comparison site or specialist site will cover him once I tick "add winter sports". The only part of a winter sport insurance we actually need is for accidents and our ski equipment. We go independently so piste closure, lift pass costs etc are not a concern. Does anyone know a company that does actually cover someone for winter sports with a "new" knee?

@sharon1953, there are quite a few threads about covering pre existing conditions. Snowcard used to be good but now don't offer cover even at a premium. Some folk recommend MPI but I suggest doing a search on Insurance and you'll see loads of discussions

No, but we had the same problem with my OH's heart condition. It was always excluded. We had Carre Neige insurance which would have got him off the mountain and to hospital (probably by helicopter in the event of a heart attack) and always had EHIC cards on us.
I wouldn't bother with insurance cover for ski equipment. It's the medical stuff and third party liability which are crucial. I'd phone a specialist broker such as MPI and see what they can do. Excluding anything arising from the knee shouldn't be a big risk if you have Carre/Carte Neige and an EHIC.

@ Pam, thanks, yes I guess being stranded on the mountain is the main concern. When going through the pre-existing medical conditions it doesn't ever give you the option not to have one of them covered - ie the knee, the reason being that they state anything indirectly related (or directly) wouldn't be covered, which could just about exclude everything! The devil is in the details a always with insurance! I will check out Carre Neige and MPI only have a feeling MPI will be using the same underwriters as all the others! I think looking at Carre Neige this doesn't apply to Austrian resorts?
@holidayloverxxx: I can't find the search facility on here, in fact I have trouble getting back to the main menu from the forums!

There aren't any options below the snowheads logo, just an option to go to the bottom of the page, an option to stop watching the topic at the bottom! If click the logo it just takes me to recent activity.

@sharon1953, I believe there is insurance available through something like the Austrian Alpine Club. If you can't find it edit your thread title to include "Austria" and the Austrian experts will help.
Frankly, I wouldn't cover people with replaced knees or cardiac arteries if I were trying to make money out of winter sports!
If you are trying to sort this out online, I'd give up. Once you have specialist requirements talking to someone is far better.

@Hells Bells - thanks, I will phone them as they don't seem to have a pre-existing online questionnaire to complete as others do but as you say, that might the best way. Fingers crossed!
