Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Loki, I don't know, is the Xinantecatl volcano extinct? If not the mountain restaurants could have the most energy-efficient central heating of any in resorts around the world!

So, what are they going to do to make it the world's highest ski area? Build a 400m hill on top of it? A bit cheaper would be to buy up Chacaltaya and close it down.

Pete Horn, Reminds me of that rather heartwarming film of a few years back, set somewhere in Wales I think, "The Englishman Who Went up a Hill But Came Down A Mountain".....

Perhaps you should contact Natives and point out their error...

I chased the source of that Natives story - www.saminfo.com and found this. To save clicking on it, it talks about an Indian resort and says "There are, or were, three higher lifts... Chacaltaya's drag lift in Bolivia is reported to have ceased operating."

So perhaps they are right.

I had a look on the bbc site for average precipitation, it looks as they wouldn't get much during winter. It might not melt, being high up, but skiers would soon churn the place up into something hard and nasty unless there's some fresh snow about.

$11m doesn't sound very much - probably no more than a decent snowdome costs! And for that you get a proper real resort! Only concern I'd have is how long it'd last with the volcano!!

"The area was popular with tourists prior to the eruption of nearby PopocatÈpetl."

Classic understatement of the year? Cool

In answer to PG's question, the answer is Yes!
The proposed resort is up to 5000m. At 4500m (15,000ft) the oxygen saturation of the blood has dropped from the normal value of 98% to 74% ( Sarah N. King, California State Science Fair, 2002). Pilots are encouraged to use oxygen above 10,000ft.
According to Mountaineering Council of Ireland "(to prevent acute mountain sickness) it is recommended that above 3000m each night should average not more than 300m above the last, with a rest day every two or three days (or every 1000m)." Which suggests it would take a week to get up to the resort!

Pete Horn - That Chacaltaya ski lift sounds mental!

I never saw it in operation because I visited at the end of the dry season ('winter') and there was no snow, only ice. Can anyone confirm if it's still running? I read a report of people skiing there in December, but it didn't say that they used the lift. Carrying your skis up at that altitude must be difficult.
