Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi,
I have been skiing for over 40 years and am now at the age of 61 have settled into a comfortable intermediate.
I had a total knee replacement 7 weeks ago and have a holiday booked in another 9 weeks, the holiday was booked last April. Does anyone on this forum have experience of skiing post total knee replacement, especially around 16 weeks post surgery. I am happy to play on the nursery slopes if need be!
Any thoughts on preparation, possibility would be greatly appreciated.

@Trish2396, Welcome to snowHeads
There are loads of dodgy knees (and some experts on dodgy knees) on this forum so I'm sure you'll be inundated with helpful ideas soon!

@Trish2396,
There are a number of posts re skiing post knee replacement.
Four months sounds a bit early.
You are unlikely to be strong enough to be safe.
Get your physio to assess your strength and flexibility

Hi, thanks for the welcome and,Jonathan thank you for your reply.
I admit I was disappointed but not totally surprised at your answer, I think I may have been a little too unrealistic with my expectations.
I shall continue with all my exercises whilst hoping for miracles, but I believe there are sitskis available in Meribel, so I may yet get on the slopes!!!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Hi
Just to say that I did mange to ski in Meribel at 15 weeks post op ( with the blessing of my physio)
I skied 3 half days and 1 full day and took it easy.
Although there was some discomfort, it was great not to have that horrible bone on bone pain.
My skiing style was as it always was, the main problem was chairlifts, they were incredibly painful to get on and off so after 2 attempts I stuck to runs accessible by cable cars.
I came home with a slightly more flexible knee ( I have problems straightening it although the bend is and always has been good) and happy to know that the skier within is still able.
I look forward to bigger and better things nex season and to all you skiers out there . . . . . It is possible, you will get back on those slopes!!

@Trish2396, thanks for the update. A TKR is on the cards for me but I am holding out at the moment. Every time I hear a story of someone returning to skiing after the Op I am encouraged, so thanks for the information and I look forward to hearing your progress next year! Best of luck to you with the re-hab.
