Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wedding on the piste - any advice?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

(Sorry if this is the wrong forum).

We would like to get married on the slopes and are thinking Chamonix in Easter 2017 because of its size and other things to do for those that don't ski. We understand that we can't legally get married in France and that is not a problem. Ideally our blessing will be outside with the opportunity to ski afterwards, we are looking for a place for our reception for up to 50 people.

I just wondered if anyone has any help or advice they can share to avoid paying the huge wedding planner prices! Any help or recommendations for places to eat, drink and sleep would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Emily.

We got married in Cham in summer 2014. Had our reception (for 50) in the Cap Horn restaurant and they were faultless. It's in the centre of town. We had the mezzanine level which was perfect for us, then went to their cellar bar at night (not private).
I have details of the beautician and English hairdresser I used if that helps.

Still a long way till Easter 17 😎

On the slope? What about a train to Bourg St Mourice and from there to Les Arcs on a funiculair? You can probably get a group discount for Eurostar too if arranged in advance. Les Arcs is only one of the options, but logistics to either Val d'Isere or other places should be easy too for a group of 50.

@Rois1980, Hi, thanks for that! I would love beautician and hairdresser details! I have come across the Cap Horn a few times when looking on the internet, so I will look into it! Did you have a wedding planner or do it all yourself?

@EmHop, BiL did the legal bit in UK and then ceremony in English church in Chamonix. I think the vicar was brought up from Geneva.

Reception up the mountain in the hotel Montenvers. Getting the train down after a few too many mojitos was interesting.

We did the legal bit in Switzerland and I escaped any church nonsense because I am on wife #2 and the bishop in Aosta went a funny colour when I mentioned my divorce.

We had a party up the mountain above Champoluc. Getting the bubble down after a few too many mojitos was interesting. p.s. Make sure your guests are adequately briefed if you have any unusual mountain transport...

Ski2.co.uk actually specialise in Alpine weddings.

Easter not such a great date in some ways as hotels will be less willing to offer bulk discounts I would think.

But obviously better for folks taking a long weekend.

Why would you need a wedding planner? The internet. And spreadsheets.

We got married here back before the days of the Internet. One bit of advice I would give is to contact your local tourist office if you need help with anything. We get a few weddings here every season and the tourist office love it - big influx of people and lots of money being spent. They will do all they can to help - hopefully the TO where you are will be the same.

Work out if you have a powder day clause for the day itself - you don't want resentful guests and/or would be spouses wink

I'm looking at a Chamonix wedding in Autumn 2017. Not a particularly flash do, mainly her and mine close family and any friends and extended family who wish to pay for themselves. Priced up two 5 bedroom chalets (one for each family), flights, restaurants for the reception but cant find anything on ceremonies. Anyone have a clue how much the chapel in les praz costs for a midweek wedding? Will prob go with a wedding organiser (waiting for a reply off one) but don't want to go down the route if it takes us stupidly over our budget! I've seen a couple of posts stating they got married up montevours hotel, if your still about could you pm a cost of the ceremony and meal please?

Bottle of Fizz and plastic glasses in everyones rucksacks, find a secluded high level place away from the crowds with a great view, form a non-orderly gaggle with your pals, eat cheese/ bread and local meats with a good playlist on your phone on loudspeaker. Stay until sun down and all ski back down together, hooning about. Stop at a nice restaurant on way down just above town and enjoy the day with mates all doing what you like doing best.....skiing. Save your money on flash hotels, it ain't worth it.......been happily married 32 years and if we were to do it over again, that'd have been us!!

@Markymark29, that sounds to me the perfect scenario. And a beautician would be a complete waste of money. Not much cop for non skiers but if you have important guests who don't ski a wedding on the piste is a daft idea anyway. If they're unimportant guests they won't want to pay to miss the party. Result!

Bear in mind that in Chamonix at Easter there could well be no snow in the valley.

It was mainly to set up the ceremony at les Praz chapel but they have emailed back and informed me they no longer conduct weddings there. So no, a wedding organiser is no longer a necessity. We are now thinking a restaurant/hotel/chalet with a balcony/garden big enough to fit around 30-40 guests whilst a close friend delivers the vows (we'll get married legally in England before or after).

I see the restaurant up the aguille du midi sits 26 and have been wondering if that could possibly work!?!

Lots of non skiers, but we should keep them entertained by booking chalets with hot tubs, a trip to the mer de glace, toboggan run at planards and a trip up brevent...plus our wedding.

Although its sounding lavish we are hoping to keep it fairly low budget!

One option could be Cervinia - quite a lot of hotels there, a big Church in the main square, and cable cars all the way to the glacier at 3500 metres so all your guests could get up and get down.

Plus there's snow and skiing all year round on the glacier I think - just a thought, though I admit Chamonix probably has a bit more going for it from a town perspective vs Cervinia...

Mmm....a church, a big lift, a restaurant at the top that'll happily take your cash for a lunch. That's a big list to start narrowing down....!

@EmHop, @manicpb, another option in Chamonix would be the top of Le Brevent - cable cars the whole way up, and piste skiing down (black from the top) as well as pedestrians being able to go up and down in the cable cars. The top restaurant is nice, has a big terrace, should fit 30+ of you. Views across the valley looking at Mont Blanc, as well as outside of the Cham valley.

You can see the terrace on the panorama here: http://www.chamonix.com/brevent-flegere-ski-area,282,en.html
