Here's a travel writer - Susan Ryan - who argues the case that men just want to thrash pistes and crud while their partners - "particularly women over the age of 40" - seek "a dreamy wooden chalet with blazing log fires, a gorgeous, delicate room, a bed that you can sink into, with duck feather pillows and a white pure cotton duvet."
Susan Ryan therefore checked in to 'Ferme de Montagne' in Les Gets and writes very gushingly about its virtues in Travel.Telegraph.
Putting this gushingly-written travel prose to one side, has she got a point? Do women seek to pamper themselves with toiletries while their men (from Milk Tray) go extreme skiing?
Or has this lady lost the plot?

Well coming from the male side, i count skiing as a holiday so luxury is a bit of a necessity! The last thing im willing to do is go on holiday and find myself in a miserable room!

Masque - sorry!!
I think your treatment (demolition) of that article is far better than mine. Love it!

Oh that kind of crap writing is irritating. In my case, I'm usually the one backing the french apt at full occupancy as long as it's ski in/out. Woman has obv. lost the plot....

Do you think that the writer has heard of the word "stereotyping"?

The women in my family require a higher standard of accomodation than the men. When we wnet to Val Claret a couple of years ago, my daughter had a fit of the vapours when she saw the size of the apartment (or clapier du lapin to use the French term), and it detracted from her and the old lady's enjoyment of the hol (altho' they still enjoyed it a lot) I'd have preferred a bigger place, but so what?, and my son didn't seem to notice.
Given the choice, we'd all go for a bit of luxury, but the women enjoy it more (in our family). I don't think any of us want the sort of nonsense in the article, particularly 'the couple run the chalet like a house party'. Ghastly, but what do you expect from the 'Daily Hellograph'?

As that woman of a certain age (43), given the choice then oooh yes please!!! BUT if the choice is between one week of unadulterated luxury - and it would need to be at that price! and two weeks skiing but staying in a rabbit hutch then just call me Bunny! (dropped the 'snow' in deference to the original)

Especially when booking as a family, we probably consider value for money rather than sheer luxury. That's not saying we don't indulge in a few treats though, like brunch at Chateau Whistler last Easter Sunday, a special new Year's Eve dinner.

I would agree, I have to admit that I don't want to live in a cupboard while on holiday, I am not going to spend the earth on something that I am going to spend only a few hours awake in and a few more sleeping. For me a skiing holiday is about skiing not wot accommodation is like. Mind you I wouldn't mind a massage or two while there!!!

I've crashed on my mate's floor in Whistler for 2 weeks on a sleeping bag - not a problem.
My missus turns her nose up if there isn't a top branded set of toileteries free in the bathroom, to quote her, "4 star or forget it". She falls into the category of "Social Skier" that most of the girls I know do, ie get up at 9.30, on the slopes for 11.15, couple of runs, hotchocolate, couple of runs, lunch for 1hr30, couple more runs, back down in pub/hotel by 15.30. But she does enjoy it.
This year she's not coming so it's 2 weeks with 5 guys in a 1 bed apartment - nice

well im happy to buck the stereotypical trend.. im all for luxury.. absolutely zero intrest in staying in a pokey dump.. i insist on some space n comfort in a room far more than my missus does

Confort is one thing - luxury is another. If I had to pay for my skiing (well I do in a way), then an extra week would be more important than fuss and bother. comfy bed, nice food, warm place, room to myself and that's all I'd need.

easiski, well put. My old lady and daughter require comfort; my son and I prefer it. The apartment in Val Claret was not comfortable.
