Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Grand Massif - Transfer or Car Hire

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi folks,

4 of us are heading to Grand Massif in March and we're looking for advice on getting to our accommodation at Sixt fer a Cheval from Geneva Airport (and back again). We've had a price for a transfer at £240 GBP - is this good value? Also car hire seems to be on the pricey side for 4 people, cases and equipment at around £400.

Also does anyone know if there is backpack storage for boots etc. at Morillion anywhere?

Thanks in advance!

Transfer sounds about right.

Car hire maybe more attractive as Sixt is a little out of the way. Sounds pricey but I don't know what car you're looking at.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hi Freerider, thanks for the reply. We've stayed at Sixt before and the bus transfers are great into Samoens and Morillion so once we're there we'd be OK.

For car hire - do you know which company is best to look at? We're looking at SUV type vehicles as we'll have 3 ski bags and 3 suit cases! Found a Quashquai for £300 which would probably fit everything.

Do you know if there is a car hire place in Samoens?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'm drawing a blank on that but will keep looking. Thanks.

Any advice on storing backpacks at Morillion?

I think if you're considering hiring a car to get from GVA to Sixt off hiring it then re-hiring it to get home and it'll cost you more than the £240 then I wouldn't bother (also can't think of a car hire place in Samoens)

@msmoneypennyuk, i've just booked through Hertz, they have a 25% sale on at the moment for bookings in January, worth looking at potentially? I did my first 'hire' transfer last year to Val D'Isere because transfer for 2 was coming in at £4-600. Hire, Parking and Petrol came in around £200 so we went with that. Just hired for a Week a small Jeep for £130 (after discount) £165 before.

@msmoneypennyuk, no idea re storing backpacks but maybe one of the ski shops at the top of the GM EXpress might e.g. Ski-Loc?

Hi, for car hire from Geneva try rental cars.com. They will quote you prices at location from all companies. Rent on the Swiss side and you get winter tyres and snow chains in the price as winterisation is compulsory. We just rented a Qashgai at Xmas and there wasn't enough room in the boot for 4 full size bags, we ended up using one of the back seats for the 4th bag so it was cramped for 4 adults. I think you may need something bigger like a full size SUV unless there are only 3 of you. Nice to drive round once we were there though. Transfers from Go Massif are good. Prices on their website. There isn't anywhere to hire a car in Samoens, the nearest place is the Hertz at Cluses. There is a train from Geneva airport to Annemasse and then the bus to Cluses. You can also get the bus from Annemasse to Samoens if you are keen to save money. Roland Gay has heated ski and boot storage at top of GME next to the gondola, I don't know if you can rent it with renting equipment but if anyone else does, please let me know too!

Similar but different: Does anyone know if the Altibus from Cluses to Flaine stops right by the railway station? Also, if the train is delayed, is there any hope of the bus waiting for it? The reason for asking is that my daughter and I are booked on a train due to arrive at 18.36 with the bus schedule showing the last bus of the day departing at 18.45 and it all looks very tight.

@Banjoman, Haven't used that since 1989 but it looks like its outside the front door of the rail station.

No idea if the bus would wait. Seems unlikely to me. You may want to research taxis in Cluses, just in case.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

4 adults bags and skis in a quashquai? really? We have an X-trail and that would be a struggle without a roof rack.

The only thing I remember about having a QQ as a hire car was how low the roof was if you were in the back seats.

Transfer price seems very reasonable - let someone else have the hassle of snow chains etc. etc.

Yes, didn't mean to bring so much stuff, it was the Xmas presents...usually pack lighter.

Transfer price does not seem too bad.

Have you tried "go Massif" for a transfer price?
We have used a few of the transfer companies from Geneva to Flaine and never had any issues.
