Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Burn blister treatment

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I burnt my thumb a week ago (grabbing a very hot plate). I followed std advice by putting thumb in cold water. A blister formed 1.5cm x 1.5cm. I know that blisters are the body's way for the affected area to self-heal underneath so I left the blister alone and clean by washing regularly with mild soap. No bandage or creams. Well it's now almost a week and I still have the blister - about the same size and no change in appearance. Normally minor scrapes heal quickly with me. I am not sure what to do now? One week seems long enough....can I pierce the blister? Should I see a doctor? Thanks.

Our local burns unit removes blisters at presentation. I would do the same, either just rub it off or carefully remove the skin with sterilised sharp scissors /knife. Don't nick the fresh skin underneath as will be very sensitive. If under the blister isn't pink new skin then you need to see someone. If the new skin is not dry then will need to redress - see pharmacist.

@snowman, it will fall off once the skin dies and the new skin forms underneath. If it isn't red and sore leave it alone. If there's pus coming out of it go and see someone.

Forgot to mention the main reason for my impatience....love to swim twice a week which I did not do last week b/c I was afraid the water exposure/pressure would puncture the blister and this then might lead to an infection of the open wound (public pool hygiene!?). I guess if I want to swim any time soon I need to check whether the skin inside the blister has healed adequately.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Chlorine would probably help clean the wound and help with the healing process...
