Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where in Italy from Dec 13?

Hi
I intend to go to Italy (or at least have to fly into an Italian Airport) either on Dec 12 (this Saturday) or Dec 13 (this Sunday) for a weeks skiing.
I'd say I'm bottom end of Advanced/Expert skier.
Are there any resorts/destinations anyone would recommend for this time of the year?
I was thinking Breuil-Cervinia, but not bound to it or obsessed by it so very open minded to any other suggestions.
Many thanks in advance!
Very Happy

Things are pretty desperate in Italy at the moment, Cervinia probably does have the best snow going. Probably best popping over/under (Mont Blanc or Frejus tunnels) the mountains to France.

I was booked in Italy - Milky way - I cancelled it and booked in Tignes. It's not looking too good there.

Snow is extremely scarce in the Alps at the moment, and no (significant) snowfall foreseen in the next 2 weeks. Only the Northwestern flanks of the Alps (haute savoie FR, valais CH, still a bit but less in Vorarlberg AU) received a nice blanket some weeks ago. Since then no precipitation and very mild. The 50+ cms that fell in f.i. Damuls Austria, has melted for a large part (see photo below).

Cervinia is your best bet.
Snow will probably be good (but hard packed because old) down to 2500 (which is 3000 vertical feet!). Slope back to the village is open according to their website.

So the partial opening and reduced ticket not worth it then ?

Fly into Verona (if it has to be an Italian airport) and hire a Car. Potential for some snow next week too.

@Onnem, For the time of the year snow is not particularly scarce all over the alps just Italy tbh. Take a look at "lowly" Zauchensee in the Ski Amade/Eastern Austrian Alps for example snow down to the village at 1350 metres.

Lucky in Zauchensee on 1350, less so in Saalbach on 1000 metres.

Friends with season passes went up on Monday morning, they were back in Aosta for lunch, I didn't bother.

TBF, we had all been in Tignes the week before so were not desperate to ski on absolutely anything.

@Onnem, what is your point? This is more or less normal for the time of year - there a quite a few high altitude (1500m and above) resorts that have decent conditions - using the term "extremely scarce" is not accurate.

Also with Saalbach where they have chosen to maintain a piste there is some decent early season skiing available.

I arrived in Cervinia this day last year and we had three great days skiing. It was all on piste as there was even less snow around than this year but at this time of year if you can ski in near empty slopes it's never too bad.
