@yorkshirelad, I said possessive, i.e. "the edge belonging to the ski" for ski's.
But you could say "this ski's knackered" meaning "ski is" as well.
My main thrust is at people using "ski's" as a simple plural though 
I don't think that I have seen the greengrocers' apostrophe used with the verb (as yet) !

@Scrumpy, Glad to see someone else winces every time the possessive is used instead of a straight plural for skis.....
Next question...is it a "greengrocer's" apostrophe, or a "greengrocers'" apostrophe. Personally I prefer the possessive version of the singular noun....

Yippee, I KNEW that I wasn't the only one wot got learned gud grammer wen I woz at skool. I'm an apostrophile AND a hyphenophile! Gyro, entertainment at a party doesn't have to be just food, drink, and music; some of us enjoy a good conversation, especially when we can hear it through the music, and even more so when it involves a topic of mutual interest! For those of a like mind, I've just seen an advertisement for Halfords which has the logo "Half Price Kids Bike." The case for the Prosecution rests....
How do you folks feel about the "Oxford comma?" I was taught that there is no good grammatical reason why "you should never put a comma before the word 'and,'" and sound reasons of comprehension why sometimes you should. For example, in somewhat older cookery-books, when it was assumed that the husband went out to work all day and the wife stayed at home, if you were reading, "Cook the meat thoroughly, boil the vegetables and your husband" - and THEN you turn the page and read - "will have a nice tea when he gets home," don't try to deny that for a split second you had a mental picture of a man in a cooking-pot, a la cannibal! Tee, hee!
