How easy is it to drive across to Verbier from Chamonix in winter?
Is the route de la Forclaz kept open?
Our son is working there this season so looking for the quickest route to visit him.
Most days it is fairly easy, only after snowfall can the forclaz be closed or difficult.

Lovely photos!
@skichampcouk, you probably know there are umpteen cols "de la Forclaz" so need caution if googling for info on opening.

go to the road conditions link via the Chamonix websitr to be sure you are getting the right pass.
My sat nav (which uses RDS for traffic problems etc) decided the Col de Forclaz was closed a couple of seasons ago, and won't accept it's ever opened since. Keeps wanting me to go via Geneva to get from Chx to Martigny in August!

@brock, midgetbiker, Thanks.
@pam w, We'll probably only visit when the weather and forecast is good.
I think he'd rather be skiing on a powder day than have his parents visit.

Evening everybody. I'm checking in for another winter representing everybody's favorite British ski tour operator.
What a summer we've had in the Chamonix valley. Now winter has arrived, and this year it's going to be a good one!! Temperature is dropping and there's been flurries of snow in town all day

Two large avalanches at GM today started by piste security. The first photo is the GM glacier in the area of the point du vue piste, (photo Jean-Luc Lugan) the second is a Fatmap screen grab of the same area with the ski lines marked. Shows well how the piste guys keep us safe.

Partial opening of GM and Les Houches this weekend, according to many gloating Geneva friends on Facebook (and by CdMB via email ).
Very jealous – I've just got a session in a snowdome on Sunday. Why did I move away from the Alps again?!

Can anyone confirm, does the MBU only give you a 50% discount for Verbier up to 6 days over the whole season?
Also, GM tomorrow woopwoop
@Fergus, looks that way , season pass allows 50% off , 6 days max from 1/12/15 to end of season
and you can only visit on one day in any week unto a max of 6 days in the season

I think I read that the annual pass is six days, the season pass six days half price.

Skied les Houches this morning.
They had only pisted the Kandahar piste, the other 3 1/2 variants were an unpisted mess.
Down to the bottom was a similar sh(t show.
The worst bit is the shuttle, they were using SWB Renault Traffics equipped for disabled access.
In other words only 5 passengers per lap, only 2 vans or a lift capacity of 30 people per hour.
The alternative - drive up to Maison Neuf wasn't working either, by 10.30 they were parking down both sides of what is not much more than a single track road!
All in all a very poor showing by Les Houches, yesterday was much better
Oh piste conditions was soft all the way through to ice due to very poor pisting and even worse snow canon management.
