Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

cameronphillips2000, I think the Eastern Alps may have had some snow, but nothing much (if at all) in French alps.
So nothing much to talk about. Cool

And nothing on the near horizon forecast either. In fact, it looks like a mild, dry spell is in the offing for a couple of weeks.

Yes, snow round my bit of the northern French Alps last night. From about 1900m, perhaps.

There's just no point in either getting excited about snow, or its absence, in October. The fall in mid October was down to about 1400m but was soon gone

Yesterday morning I was walking in a t-shirt and the forecast is for mild and sunny weather

Perfect! snowHead

Val Thorens had a nice dump but as @Gaza said, with temperatures rising and no snow forecast over the next week, it'll all be gone soon.

Personally I always get excited about big dumps in Oct/Nov - they don't stick around long, but if you're quick and don't mind hiking there's normally fun turn to be had.

This last snowfall dropped all of 10cm though, which would be worthless even if it fell on 2m base in January.

Excellent conditions in Tignes on the glacier. Elsewhere, too early to care.

So if snow doesn't fall in the French Alps then there is no snow in the Alps...?

True, but I guess they help to chill the ground which means when more snow comes it helps build up the snow layer quicker?

Dumped in Montgenevre yesterday, traffic chaos yesterday afternoon and there was still loads around when I drove through this morning.Forgot phone so no pics, sorry. Snow line all the way down to Cesana. There was also snow above 1500m in Serre Chevalier, but not huge amounts. Sprinkling on our garden this morning, and the mountains are white. It was enough to close the Col du Galibier though.

Interesting theory, and I really don't know the answer.

I'd guess it depends on the air temps - snow is a good insulator, so if the air temps are below 0°C, I'd have thought that would have a stronger cooling effect. Just a guess though.
