Howdy
Stewing on another USA trip for 2017 and thinking of a 10 day trip to either JH or Steamboat with a few days at Breck or other resort. I heard Breck isn't that great for boarders and a bit too touristy but if its great we'll consider it. I like the idea of direct flights so thats the one con for JH but if its anywhere near as good as Utah, it'll be worth it. Thoughts please?

I've only skinned around JH but what I saw of it was pretty impressive. And the town is great. Very cool. I would expect that it's as good as Utah. With better beer.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It's on my list, but it's hard to get to. You can't get there from here (uk) in one day and ride the next. Feel free to prove that wrong, and maybe then I can go.
There are other hills around there I would like to ride at too, so I would not just look at the one place.
I would say it's a very different concept from Colorado, closer to Utah in approach, from what I can tell. That is: not people in ski suits with furry collars and escalators to get you to the (flat) pistes, but real hills with real people. And cows.
Actually driving up there from Utah is another option I looked at. It's not all that far, and maybe I could do that overnight so I don't miss a day...
Last season I'd not have bothered with either Utah or Wyoming, and the further south you went... well... I guess I mean it's all about the snow. You'd probably not want to be in the Tetons in a bad season as it's not really entertainment central, as far as I can deduce.

Think you might be able to get there same day by connecting for United at Chicago. Not far to drive from SLC. We left Jackson early am and skied Park City in the afternoon.
JH is very good but it's steep and tall. Do tram laps down the Hobacks a few times and you'll know about very and funky snow.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you are thinking about Steamboat, check the lift pass cost first.
You can get to J.H. same day from a choice of hubs eg. Denver, SLC, DFW, ORD etc. No need for a car as the airport is close to town. You will be a long way from Breckenridge. Grand Targhee is easily reachable by bus from J.H. it is a locals hill well worth a visit and would be great on a board after a fresh snowfall.

@philwig,
"You can't get there from here (uk) in one day and ride the next. Feel free to prove that wrong, and maybe then I can go."
It's doable as the time difference works in our favour on the way out.
We went to JH a few years ago, for a week, and skied the morning after we left the UK. We left Newcastle at 6.30 am, flew to Amsterdam with KLM, then flew to Jackson via Minneapolis. We checked into our hotel in Jackson Hole at about 21.30 on Saturday, popped out for a quick bite to eat and were in bed by 22.30.
We slept unconsciously until the following morning and got up raring to hit the slopes!
It was a brilliant trip and I'd really recommend JH. A great town and great skiing and, as mentioned above, no car required. It must be the shortest airport to resort transfer in the world - about 20 minutes! Does anyone know of a shorter one?

We've also been to Breckenridge and Utah (Park City area and Alta), which were all excellent. We'd go back to all of them. In fact we are heading to Breckenridge area (staying at Keystone) for 24 nights in February. Happy days!

Same day connection from London via Atlanta. Grand Targhee is really uncommercialised. Teton Pass (guide needed) and Snow King. Many people I know have driven on to Big Sky after. I would describe Jacksons "front side" as one big fun park, with trees, bumps, chutes, drops, each of all size all within easy reach. ( not too much vertical as with most US resorts ) Through the gates opens up so much more. Get a guide and definitely go ... you wont be disappointed ..

The end of the runway at Aspen is literally next to Buttermilk. It might take 20 minutes to walk if your bags were really heavy and didn't have wheels.

Thanks everyone some food for thought there. @Lechbob, I remembered reading your trip report at the time so thanks for reposting as a reminder.
I'm thinking that it was so good in Utah what with Snowbord and Solitude as a break away from PC and Canyons that it'll be hard to top that. Would you say JH compares to Snowbird, besides it being bigger?
