@Little Martin, I'm with you on this one. Off to La Tania (en famille hence the decision to stay in a family friendly resort) on 3 April. There seems to be a lot of uncertainty around with a spike in temps in a week or so, hopefully that will be short lived. I remember vividly the temp gauge at the gondola station in La Tania showing 16C at mid-day 3 years ago in mid- March. And do you know what, the snow on Folyeres was still lovely to ski.

@franga, This time last year, they had a drought of snow on the run into march, with warm temps iirc. Compared to this year, it's snowed a lot recently and is cold still, and snow depths are bigger this year too so looking good for easter.
La Tania is great this time of year, can be very warm perfect for apres outside the crome bar, la tania has it both ways can be very cold in winter due to position and lack of sun, then when the sun does hit it in spring, sun tan time, and definitely pit zips open on the way back if not already open
I'll definitely be taking my fleece to be skiing in at easter if conditions look suitable.

@Little Martin, its OK - you'll be spared more for a while - working outside of 3V for a bit. (Though it was very good still just round the corner today...).
Still good on North-ish aspects, sunny stuff starting to turn already...

Not quite doing that (have to some work at least to pay for skiing), but coming out in 10 days, and hoping the low temps keep the snow decent for then.

Arrived in La Tania this morning and had a great days skiing over in Courchevel followed with a few runs down Folyeres, what a great run! Sun was out all day but the snow was good. First day ever in the 3V and thoroughly enjoyed it, slopes were pretty empty today, hopefully things won't get too much busier from tmrw. Currently feels quite cold on the balcony and the sky has clouded over, don't think any snow is forecast but I will hope anyway!

I almost daren't mention it, but J2ski's long range forecast is showing something to make you smile for Monday the 28th.
I fear it will push later in the week and diminish, as these things tend to do*, but would be nice if it stayed.
* Do the tour operators influence the forecasts do you think?
"Ooops, still got lots of spaces Easter Week, whack a foot of fresh powder in the forecast for the Monday will you? That'll get them booking in!"

@Little Martin Not just us then!!
Enjoyed Mouflon back down to Mottaret, bumps included, I felt I made peace with moguls on that run!
Mauduit down to Meribel was the only run we have not enjoyed.
@Little Martin we are planning on heading out to ski Jerusalem on Thursday, thinking about pic bleu to get across to Meribel, does that tend to be more Meribel than Courchevel as far as runs go?

Pic bleu last year seemed to be almost permanently closed.
Meribel (IMHO) is icy in the morning and slushy and horrible in the afternoon... Have a nostalgic affection for the village, but the skiing to me is really is the worst of the 3V.

All, which way down into Meribel from La Tania would you suggest were we to take our 2 young boys (8+5) with us? They are both OK with blues and reds (with good snow on them). I suspect we'll be mostly skiing in the Courchevel valley in the PM (they're in ski school in the AMs) but I'd like them to experience skiing into a different valley at some point - something which I'm sure they'd like to boast to their mates about.

Why cross Meribel?
OK a pain to get across to Saulire, but then go down Aigle to Mottaret and up the cable (forgot name!) then down to St Martin - bypass Meribel.

Deary me, what a precious lot you all are. Nothing wrong with Meribel pistes. It's a wonder they aren't utterly ruined considering the traffic (it being the middle of 3 valleys and all), the pisteurs work miracles. Mauduit is a superb fast run, easily one of the best in the 3V.

@franga, just take the Boulevard de la Loze from Dou des Lanches. You'll have to push them on some parts so stay behind them but it's still much less hassle than Pic Bleu. A short blue ski down and you can then choose blue or green runs to the centre.

@roguemazza, @CourchGal, @Little Martin, please learn to ski. Conditions in the 3V's at the moment are fantastic for March.

Boulevard de la Loze was closed several days last week but I would agree easier than Pic Bleu. Agile we only skied in the morning and had some hard packed sections as did Lievre.

5-6 days ago the pistes across the three valleys were in as near perfect condition as possible, i'd be very surprised if they have deteriorated that much in less than a week during a period of fairly cool temperatures!

Quick question on ski passes - can you buy a single day upgrade from a Courchevel valley pass to a 3V pass?
It looks like the family pass is going to be best value for a family of 6; everyone pays the child rate, for a pass of the same scope and duration.
5 out of those 6 are unlikely to want to go much beyond the blues and reds of Courchevel being their second week on the snow.
If I get a day to myself during the week, and some good snow, I'd like to do justice to the full range of the 3V and join some of the other families that we are going with. In the past I've bought a 3V extension for less than the cost of a full single day's pass.
I can't see a single day extension listed on the 3V website, but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't offered?

Thanks everyone, I think the Boulevard de la Loze sounds like the best option. Depending on time I might try and take them down to St Martin too (via Jerusalem of course).

@Little Martin, the "Meribel pistes are rubbish" thing it's a hoary old cliché of many years standing that is no longer true, but still does the rounds because many resort reviews haven't been updated for years. Although in a selfish note, if it keeps them clear of nervous Nellies there's more room for me to hoon around with a big grin on my face.

Last few times I skiied them, they weren't that good, so from my personal experience of skiing there - I know meribel suffers more due to where the valley sits, temperatures, sun etc, combined with traffic pinch points so you get a lot of people coming down the same areas scraping off the snow.
I'm sure they have their good times when it's not so busy and good weather conditions.
I will still ski there, I'm perfectly capable of doing so, just I'm aware that the pistes won't be as good as other areas, so by choice I won't spend as long in the valley as I would do in courchevel for instance.
There are good runs there, had great fun coming down bosses in jan for instance, and some of the higher up runs are certainly better than the ones that run into the centre.

what did you tell the school: the boys are off sick?

@franga. Boulevard de la Loze is often closed after fresh snow due to avalanche risk (as last week). Pic Bleu is one of the steeper blues, and the initial section can sometimes get icy, but if they are comfortable on reds they should be okay. Note if you go this way you need to take either the Altiport chair or the short Foret rope tow if you want to get to Meribel Centre
|
|

I think it was because the conditions virtually everywhere else were so good last week that we found a few of the pistes in the Meribel area less good and the blues coming down to Meribel centre were among the most crowded. Having skiied in Austria in March it was a change not to have to negotiate heavy porridge snow on the last runs down.

A little fresh snow last night and quite windy today but it looks as tho we have a sunny weekend ahead. I skied in all 3Vs on Monday and conditions were wonderful. From perfect corduroy on the first few runs to spring snow later in the afternoon. Cold temperatures mean the snow is holding up really well for the time of year. The French team were training on the roc de fer piste today ahead of St Moritz, great to watch.
