Poster: A snowHead

As the title suggests... which is better for a large group (17) of guys and girls in their mid twenties looking for a good party resort?
Flying out to Memmengin on the 27th of February for a week so considering these two.
Obviously both have reputations for great après scene, but I have read in some reports that Ischgl can dominated by blokes in their 40s and 50s (no offence to anyone of that vintage here).
Input appreciated, especially from anyone who's been to both!

Been to both, I much prefer Ischgl although others on here will differ. I think you have to split the after skiing activity into two - après and nightlife. In terms of strict après there probably isn't much between them although I'd still favour Ischgl. You then have to think about later in the evening where I think you'll find that even St. Anton aficionados would have to admit that Ischgl is better.
Ischgl isn't dominated by middle class blokes. Sure there are lots of them including me but plenty of people in twenties and thirties of both sexes.

Apres, as in just after skiing, IMO St Anton is better. NOTHING beats the Mooserwirt, just for starters.
Nightlife, as in late at night, I think Ischgl is a littler better.
Ischgl is probably slightly more on the 'older, wealthier' side of the scale (at least in terms of vibe), but I don't think there's that much in it really.
Choose between them based on what you want to ski:
Offpiste = St Anton (though Ischgl isn't that behind)
Piste = Ischgl (by quite a long way)
You'll have plenty of fun drinking in either.

Its a long long time since I was in Ischgl and there was not really much night life then ...
Except the end of season party at the Idalp Joch ... It was Tina Turner ... so it was a long time ago.
Stanton is very much a Gortex village and the nick name for it was "Ugly Girls Paradise", but it is very lively and varied from packed disco to piano bar.
When you are in a group of 17 you will make your own nightlife so I would not worry where you went.
Any tiny Austrian Village with a bar is up for party, often the smaller the better.
Best nights ever have been in Damuls in the Bregenzerwald. amazing night in the tiny-est bar with the 1 metre wide dance floor.
The kiosk in the square Kaprun,
Oh the list is too long.
And I want to make it longer.

Ischgl is way more fun.Easy drinking village.Off mountain, straight into whatever fun bar you fancy that day.More skiing and drinking logistics involved with St Anton. For a group of 17 boys and girls, St Anton will involve a lot of faffing!!

Faffing was invented in Stanton, then developed up the road in Pettneu ... But its spelt "phaafing" ... it has a silent "P" ...like in the swimming pool.

SA for sure.
I is world class but SA is #1.
SA more varied, I more seedy and definitely more male. Think stag do and you get close.
If you haven't been to either I'd do I first and save the best for last....
+1 for any Austrian resort. I've had some epic long weekends in Kitz over the race weekend.

So both great for après, but Ischgl shades it with the later nightlife? Just read that it has it's own Ibiza style night club!
I think it will probably come down to where we get the most suitable accommodation. Got a decent offer for apartments in Ischgl so think it's looking like the winner!

@Mt, +1
I find it weird that the main parameter is après and no indication of what skiing is like? Cheaper to go to Ibiza I would have thought.

I've not done St Manton so can't compare, but then was spoilt by my very first ski trip being to Ischgl so can give some more colour there - in my experience...
Gender: About the same as most ski resorts in my experience. There are a couple of bars that tend to be sausage-heavy but plenty with a better mix.
Age:
- Children: almost none.
- 18-25: 20%
- 25-35: 35%
- 35-45: 30%
- 45+: 15%
Major Apres Bars (in more or less random order):
- Kuschtall: Core 18-35, very good vibe with both inside and outside space.
- 'The one next door to the Kuschtall'*: Core 25-45, quieter but both in/out space.
- 'The one next door to the one next door to the Kuschtall'*: Core 45+, good laugh and fun place to abandon innocent single guys to be prayed on by cougers
- Trofana Alm: Core 25-35, sausage-heavy, rammed and a bit poo-poo the one time we tried it - but others swear by it so we may have just been unluckey and not tried it again because there are so many other bars!
- Schatzi: Core 18-45+, VERY sausage-heavy! Great location at the bottom of a home run with in/out space. (Clothed) dancing girls on the bar, hence the sausage but other than that...
- Niki's Stadl: Core 18-45. Hard to comment on this one with the owner, life and sole of the place Niki Ganahl passing away a week or so ago. Hopefully it will continue like before - the loudest and longest apres party in town.
- Kitzloch: Core 25-45, great fun and best pear schnapps in town. You're group will spent it's first beer (+schnapps) moaning about the crap, german pop music - and their second singing and dancing along on the tables in their ski boots.
* Yes, these do tend to get a visit later in our apres evenings

You know it makes sense.

Have done both with a corporate party of 45 persons of various ages (20's, 30's and 40's) both male and female - St Anton wins hands down IMO and the opinion of the attendees both for Apres and Nightlife

@Markymark29, The reason I'm asking about après is because I feel like I have a good idea about what the skiing is like in both resorts - St Anton offers more for those hungry for off-piste (which would suit me personally), whereas Ischgl has plenty of good pisted red and blue runs to cater for intermediates (which is the majority of our group).
Basically both resorts will have great skiing on offer to satisfy us. Not worried about that at all!
So just thinking the differentiator when making a decision is the après. We are all 23-27 and will be going at both the après and late night scene hard!
So I guess I'm just looking to get an idea on which resort is better for a younger crowd.
No doubt we'll have a great trip whichever one we pick, which is looking like Ischgl at the minute. If it is we'll just have to go to SA the year after then I can come back here and post my own thoughts on the matter!
Incidentally, what would be considered the most popular European resorts for the 20-somethings? I'm guessing it's not SA & I as they are on the slightly more expensive end of the scales...

@ClubCanadian, Interested to know why that was? With a group of 45 it sounds like you'd be making you're own fun anyway. The same could probably be said of our group of 17.

@barrymct, I'd suggest you maybe look at Soll, Mayrhofen, Kitzbuhel or Sauze D'Oux. Ischgl has a better late night scene than StA by the way, I agree with Clarky999 above, Ischgl also has better piste skiing. |
+ Saalbach.
@barrymct I'm 27 and first went Ischgl 18 months ago with my mates and loved it. Post dinner nightlife is very good and we never felt too young and definitely partied with people of the opposite sex too. Also worth saying that though I didn't do any offpiste, there was certainly alot on offer and the tree skiing near to Paznauner Thaya looks awesome.

Indeed it is!
@barrymct, if the majority of your group want to ski lots of reds and blues, personally I think Ischgl would be the better bet. You might also want to consider Saalbach though, which would also be cheaper.
On another note, I really don't know where the 'St Manton' nickname comes from: there's loads of hot Skandi seasonnaire girls!

@Barrymct - We defo made our own apres in both resorts but found there was more variety both for nightlife and Apres in St Anton. The bars in I tended to be full of smokers too so all your gear stank the following day. Moosewirt in St Anton is probably the best Apres i've ever seen but it was the final weekend, great weather and packed outside.
As another poster suggested there is a bit of a seedier undertone to the nightlife seen in I compared to St Anton.
VD is also a great resort for Apres and Nightlife as is Saalbach. Since our company held these trips we've done Chamonix x1, Saalbach x1, Ischgl x1, St Anton x1 and Val D x2. Val and St Anton rank as the best all round resorts for groups of mixed ability wanting good Ski/Boarding, instruction and Apres.............But i'm sure others would have different views

Depends on the bar, the smaller ones still allow smoking, and others have segregated smoking areas (eg Anthony's).

@Sitter, I was in Mondschein in Nasserein 3 weeks ago, and an old guy lit his pipe at the bar, we made a quick exit......On reflection, I think the smaller locals type places maybe allow it but I've never had an issue in last 3-4 seasons, most people seem to go outside now. At the end of the day if a bar isn't to your liking you just leave, it's no big deal nowadays IMO.

I think Ischgl has the better apres.
The Kitzloch is about as good as it gets, but there are just SO many bars and they are ALL packed - there's something for everyone.
St Anton is great and the Mooserwirt is a real experience, but I think Ischgl has more variety.

The only time I've suffered from this, and the only time it actually registered that you COULD still smoke inside (at that time) was on about my 5th Austrian trip - and then only because we had a smoker in our group who seemed to read "you CAN smoke indoors" as "you MUST smoke constantly indoors". On the plus side we did break him so completely on the last night that waiting for the transfer bus he looked whiter than the snow

I had a kidney infection so had to visit a specialist who works from our local STD clinic yesterday, which was interesting to say the least. As I sat in the waiting room a young blond, pretty, well spoken girl walks in in a L2A seasonaiires hoodie. The protocol at such places seems to not to make contact or talk to anyone so
I didn't dare talk to her about skiing. I found it hard to laugh though and wondered how many other seasonairres come back and have to make similar appointments.

One of the hosts in the chalet I use in Morzine had to make a medical appointment at the end of the season a couple of years back. Not the STD clinic though but at the dentists. Something like £500 to repair the damage done by a season of Jager drinking!

@cameronphillips2000, when I lived in Whistler some years back the local GP became an STD unit in the winter months. Patient confidentiality was such that word was around Tapleys before the sufferer had even left the clinic.Reputations won and lost

The question is a bit like asking which is the best football team - Real Madrid or Barcelona, the best footballer - Ronaldo or Messi. Both are absolutely fantastic and you will have a great time in both. As Clarky999 says above decide based on the level of skiing of the group. If you are / have red run or below skiers then it's Ischgl. If the level is above that then St Anton. Enjoy.

@downhillalltheway, Once again, I realise they both have great après, my question was about whether the demographics between the two are much different... i.e. is one of them a "younger" resort. No significant difference going by these answers.
Ischgl has been booked now anyway... can't wait!
