The La Plagne villages are starting to look a bit grim on the cameras - lots of snow melted over the last few days, fingers crossed for a change in the weather in the next week or 2!

We have never been to la plange could someone tell me if we need to buy a local pass or a all over pass,we are intermediate skiers

The La Plagne pass will give you plenty to ski in a week (as long as conditions are okay) unless you're really desperate to rack up the miles and never do the same piste twice. Depending on where you're staying it can also take a long time to get to the cross over to Les Arcs for the rest of the Paradiski area. However the Discovery pass is quite good as gives you one day to experience Les Arcs.

@Jenniper, yes (it's a bubble). It's not free though - you can get a pedestrian pass for Montchavin Les Coches which is cheaper than a ski pass. I can't remember how much it is per day though. I think you can only get it at the lift pass office.

Pleased to hear the lift should be operational by the time we go in January, makes the walk back from the apres/restaurant much less painful after a day on the piste!

Been thinking about my forthcoming trip, never skied over in Les Arcs before (Staying in Belle Plagne) but have opted for the full Paradiski passes this trip. What's the quickest route to get from the Vanoise Express to the main Arc Bowl? Looks convoluted from the piste map but that may just be the limitations of the map or my map reading skills!!!

@fixx, I think (always a danger..) that there are some new lifts in Les Arcs which may have a significant impact on the fastest time 
The original 'Challenge' pre dates the Bergerie lift and improvements in La Plagne 1800 similarly the new Becoin lift may make a difference to the return leg.
The new Montalbert Gondola should make a 7 to 10 minute improvement on its own...

I really enjoy the long blues down to Les Coches (either Pierre Blanches or Mont Blanc). Also really enjoyed the red down to the bottom of Inversens lift (the run may be the same name), bit of a motorway but quite a good blast. Levasset is a nice long blue down from the Roche De Mio Gondola. Depends to an extent on where you're staying though, when I went in March we were in Les Coches so didn't spend as much time as I wanted exploring the Montalbert area

ok sorry guys, i'm staying in Plagne 1800 so all the Plagne lifts are reasonably easy to get to. so any good routes with a decent lunch would be great

Staying in 1800? If the snow is good don't forget to do the black off the Grande Rochette.
With a good covering of snow it's lovely. Cruise out the bottom through centre, under the Hotel France. Over the road round the corner and straight into La Mine for happy hour.

Whisky_priest, your itinerary is ok if you are happy on black runs and like the noisy bleakness of La Mine (and going all the way to France to drink in "Traditional English Pub").
But gazzaredcruiser states he is a "good ish intermediate", and the top section of that black is usually steep and narrow with hefty moguls.
I think he would have a far better end to his day if he took the blue down from Grande Rochette and kept right of the Aollets drag to finish up at La Bergerie. Much more relaxing. And you might find me there

Gazzaredcruiser, the reds toward Champagny are nice, as is the one on the right of Grand Rochette as you exit the building. Also liked the reds around Montchavin. Can't recommend lunch stops as I'm too tight to buy lunch (jambon fromage baguette on the run).

Thanks Jonpim. Other good places to stop and admire the view while feasting on your picnic are the top of the RdM, Grand Rochette, Verdons and Becoin, basically any of the higher lifts. Some of these have token picnic tables (not many though to encourage you to visit the mountain restaurants). We normally stop at 1:30 / 2 pm when the queues form.

Second hand snow report from people in La Plagne on the opening day says that conditions are OK if a bit hard. They live in 1800, so I doubt they went any lower than that.

I've been very pleased to note more picnic tables in my ski area - it's something I've mentioned on their feedback forms a few times. I like having a picnic when the weather is nice, but having a table makes a big difference to comfort. There's no indoor "sac a dos" room though - they're often not hugely salubrious, and full of school groups, but very welcome in bad weather.

oh and btw lunch in a good mountain top restaurant should an integral and essential part of anyones week skiing, in fact i'd make it compulsory

Ah yes, "sac a dos" pam w, quite so - those tables-with-seats are ok when the weather is fine, but when its cloudy and cold (maybe snowing) then you need somewhere sheltered and warm.
There is a large one by the top of Melezes, and a smaller one at the top of Gondola out of Champagny.
There should be more - anyone know of any?
There used to be a bar in Belle Plagne (on the way down to Belle Plagne chair from Matafan) with comfy sofas - one time run by Crystal, then taken over by a schools outfit - that allowed you to eat sandwiches inside and had good cheap coffee. Not sure if its still there (was in 2013/14, but didn't try last season).

Just so you know, once the pistes are closed they are 'out of bounds" and the piste patrol take this very seriously simply because they don't want any skiers being mangled through a piste machine! Each machine is equipped with a radio and call up piste patrollers on skidoo's to escort skiers off the mountain and of course will confiscate your lift pass etc. and I guess could arrest you for the French version of trespass...
