Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Helmets

If you use a helmet, what can you recommend?

I don't usually wear a helmet, but am swaying towards buying one purely because I value what's inside my skull and because I am pushing the boundaries and starting to worry a bit about my skull!

Go to a shop, try on the different makes and sizes, then buy the one that is the best fit, whatever the cost. Fit is more important than almost any other aspect when it comes to helmets. If it doesn't fit well then it will be uncomfortable, and it won't do it's job properly.

Santa brought me a helmet for Christmas.

Looked at the Giro and leedham. ended up with the leedham due to the fit feeling better.

Just try as many as you can and go for the one that feels best.

InaSpin, Kramer's advice is spot on but don't forget to take your goggles with you as they're not always compatable. Similarly, sunglasses can be an awkward fit with a helmet as the arms get compressed by the helmet's earpieces.

If you're prone to getting hot once you find a manufacturer that gives you the correct fit select a model that gives plenty of ventilation holes that can be plugged/closed when it's cold.

If you plan on getting in to racing then a model that will accepts a chin guard in the future would be best.

Fit is everything, but look at the Giro 9.9 if you can. Mine is light, well ventilated and comfortable (I look like a berk in it, but who cares? I probably look like a berk anyway. Perhaps I am a berk.).

Forget about safety. The number one reason to wear a helmet is they are the warmest, dryest ski hat you'll ever have. They also do a good job keeping your goggles dry and on your head during a fall.

Sunnies with a helmet??? No way! If you wear a helmet, you have to wear goggles - that is a simple and indisputable sartorial fact!

oh - and don't assume that the helmets of one manufacturer will all fit the same. I bought a Red helmet a few years back based on the fit. The next model down its range gave me a massive pressure spot on the base of my skull and I couldn't wear it for 2 minutes in the shop.

Tony Lane, if you want to look a complete berk (and who doesn't?), you wear sunglasses and have the goggs up on the hemet. Works for me. I don't particularly like wearing goggs, but it's handy to have them in case the light flattens, and the helmet is a good place for them.
