Hello, I'll ski with my family (4 people) next January for 10 days.
Firstly I was thinking Zermatt, but since the prices there are very high and I heard some people saying that the skiing there wasn't so great, I'm not so sure.
We are all intermediate skiers. Anyone could suggest a resort in France or Switzerland that has reliable snow, isn't so crowded as les 3 valleys and has a good amount of ski area?

Les Arcs or La Plagne might suit. Tignes or Val Thorens will be more snow sure - but I can't comment on how busy they are then - or extensive they are. Someone will help out.

@lucas2222, if you want Zermatt without the prices, try just the other side of the border and stay in Cervinia. Very intermediate friendly.

@lucas2222, It is not often we see the terms "crowded" and "January" in the same query. With the exception of New Year week, which next year finishes on the 2nd, January is usually the quietest time of the year. Courcheval may be more crowded over the orthodox New Year than most of the big French and Swiss resorts, but the rest should not be too bad.
So the requirement is for big, French and Swiss resorts which are likely to have good snow and offer lots of intemediate skiing -well there are dozens. You could write a book describing them all and their relative merits. Actually someone has, it is called "Where to Ski and Snowboard" May I humbly suggest buying a copy.

MdC has a reasonable amount of ski area, but it's not vast. Lovely place though.

Whistler is the biggest in North America, and a friend who went there once said it was quite nice. Though getting good Tartiflette is more likely in Tremblant.

The only thing I would say is that January, at least after the new year week, is very quiet, even in the 3vs. If you take 10 days in the middle of January there will be very few lift queues.

Just re-read your post --- January = very cold, so maybe avoid Cervinia/Zermatt.....

There are some good suggestions here but if I was going in a group of four in January I would wait until near the time and pick the area with the best snow. It is a very quiet time and you should get a good deal. As emwmarine says, even the 3V will be nice and quiet.
