Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello
Looking for some advice on Iceland - I think there's a few posters here living there?
I've been during the summer, for a roadtrip - no skiing - and would like to go back again for the same route (ring road around) but with some skiing (touring) where possible here & there. Was wondering if you can still ski at either end of the summer, but also at a time when the interior is still accessible as would like to do a few trips in if I can. Not sure if there's the right overlap in any months?
Thanks!

Still bags of snow here just now. I think there should be good conditions until the end of June in some places if you're not afraid of a little bit of walking. The East gets warmer in the summer so invariably melts out earlier. The interior roads open up when the snow melts. Kerlingarfjoll in the interior used to be a summer ski area and it on my tick list for summer time touring.

Frankly if I was going to visit to ski late season I'd plan on crossing the interior via Kerlingafjoll and the other mountains/sights on route then head up to Akureyri ski around the Troll Peninsula then head to the West Fjords depending on how the snow looked. Theres a few other fairly sure ski descents on the way back down to Reykjavik as well.
If you want to run the ring road and have reasonable weather for touring I'd recommend coming here in late-March/April really.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I have not been there, but I quite fancy the heli stuff there. I have a mate working there this season, and it's pretty close to the UK. Their season is late, which is handy. The catch is... they don't have trees, so maybe the snow will suffer a bit from that, and I get bored quickly without trees to slalom. I'd be interested to hear more though.

@meh, thanks so much - that's all super helpful! I cannot wait to get back there. Iceland was easily the best place I've ever been to.
