Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi guys,
I am planning on going skiing from the 15-18 for three nights. Was thinking of Val thorens or Tignes as I am told that they are the only two places where you can expect good snow that time for a BEGINNER. I am uncertain about the apres scene in both places since apres is a big deciding factor for me. Do any of you have any idea as to where I can find great apres with youngsters as well as beginner skiing.
Also is val thorens apres better or Tignes?
Thanks.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@anantg, from the point of view of being a beginner, the nursery areas in VT are ideal, although I haven't been to Tignes to compare it with. From the point of view of Apres we always make our own when in VT, but some head off into town for drinkies. There will probably be quite a few students about though.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Depends what you mean by apres - neither will have tub thumping umpah music! But there is a variety of bars around Tignes Le Lac serving most tastes. The nursery slope (Le Rosset) will be fine for snow at that time and is free so if you are a complete beginner you will not have to buy a lift pass. Both resorts will be slowing down in terms of numbers and some of the bars and shops will be closing down that week - so there will be a few 'drink the bar dry' events.
To give you an idea most bars seem to have a Facebook page - check out the Loop, Marmotte Arms, Brasero, Queue de Cochon, Jam Bar

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

What about L2A?
The beginner slopes are on the glacier (lift access up and down) and the Pano bar at the mid station has a great happy hour apres.

And there are also great (green and blue) beginner runs served by the FREE Bollin fast quad chairlift at Tignes Val Claret. As well as the plus-point of the fast, comfy chairlift, there's a nice mountain restaurant at the top of the lift too.

@Hells Bells, Folie Douce - from Tignes as an absolute beginner would involve a taxy or bus to La Daille and the gondola - both ways.

@anantg, How about Obergurgl? Heading there next week, snow looks good and well suited to beginners more known for one or two apres locations on the mountain.
I wouldn't find Tignes great for beginners, it is a great ski area, Val T more suitable IMO

^ There are now Folies in Val T, Meribel and Alpe d'Huez, as well as the original one in VDI,
I'd go to Val d'Isere if you're after good apres. You can catch the La Daille bubble to La Folie Douce and back down again, and you can walk over to Cocorico which is BRILLIANT. There's also the Moris and the Pacific bar which have live music - and there's Dick's T Bar for the night owls.
I think Val D has the best apres in the Alps, personally!

@anantg,
How old are you? Having fun with youngsters can mean different things depending on how old you are and how old 'youngster' means to you.
To me a youngster is anyone under 40.
