Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Poles - Mens vs Ladies

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am looking at buying so me cheap poles for the first time.

I am surprised by them being marketted as either Mens or Ladies. My first assumption was this was a length thing (As in ladies would typically be shorter than mens) but that doesn't seem to be the case. So what are the differences? Or is it just colours schemes?

Thank

Colour Scheme.

Buy what ever you like and is comfortable to hold.
eBay is usually great for a bargain if you don't mind a scratch, although there are many in the shops too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@NickyJ, I'm astonished, frankly. There's no plausible bio-mechanical difference that could make any difference in poles. Particularly cheap ones.

Nonsense.

I was completely surprised, the pair I am eyeing up are marketed as mens ones and are my size. I seriously dont care what they look like, just checking I wasn't missing something.

thanks for the responses.

@NickyJ, I have to ask - Is it pink for women and blue for men?

Not really. Most seem to be silver and black for both! However they have various patterns which are hard to make out from the photos. Maybe the ladies have flower pictures on?

The ladies ones will have much nicer curves than the mens. Very Happy

Is it possible ladies poles might come with slightly smaller grips? I believe females tend to have smaller hands for a given height - but I could be completely wrong.

Is there a price difference? Can't imagine they'd even bother with kerb's thought of different sized handles, since they're generally used with thick gloves. Perhaps if you buy "men's" ones, you'll start looking at "birds" and saying "phwoar".

I never heard of gender-based poles. But the ones I mostly use are a good 40 years old and even if they exist now, they wouldn't have been thought of then!

Mrs Zorrac has poles that were labelled as ladies poles and as @kerb, suggests they have smaller handles / grips. The shop also had one with slightly different colour scheme with same grip as a kids pole.

@Zorrac, thanks for that. If that is th case I have large hands and take a large in ladies gloves so buying the "men's" version would probably be better for me.

Price wise, no real difference but I am finding more Men's options left on clearance probably because length wise it is a bit short for the majority of men.

Well I ended buying "womens" ones, liked the feel and the price. They had some K2 ones reduced to £15 but then they realised that they were missing the basket so they offered me another pair for the same price (felt the same but different colour scheme) so very happy.
