I hope the alfresco diners were wearing transceivers and carrying probes and shovels.
Some people go to lunch so unprepared. Will they never learn?

As above, the 'Wäxellouwina' is a known phenomenon of that valley. Swiss Radio Meteo has a bit more about it ...

The prevailing avalanche risk was level 1, and it's reckoned that the trigger is an ice fall or landslide. It presents little danger in the town, because most of the airborne material lands higher in the valley, and the 'pressure wave' (usually highly destructive in this form of avalanche) is light.

Now that the glacier has retreated , the canyon is deeper and the avalanche is decelerated more. |
