Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cheap French resort

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, can anyone recommend a resort in France with cheap hotel? Looking for somewhere not too busy, close to slopes, warm, clean and decent food (HB). Just back from folgarida which was great but a long drive so next half term looking for something a bit closer. Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheap, France, Half term only ever get included in the same sentence when accompanied by the words not or never.

You may get lucky if you research very carefully some of the very small resorts that do not have any TO presence. They tend to be single village based with very limited ski area, maybe 6 to 12 lifts.

I have never skied any of these, know nothing about them, and they are difficult to find a lot of information about but here is a list, all based in the Haute Savoie, to start with. The only reason I have even heard of these is that as part of my season pass for Les Gets/Morzine they have included 3 complimentary days at these and a few better known resorts.

Les Brasses
Les Haberes
Nancy/Cluses
Semnoz
Cordon
Mont-Saxonnex
Himmentaz (Bellevaux)
Praz de Lys - Sommand
Passy - Plain Joux
Bellvaux/ La Chevrerie
Manigod

Hopefully other snowheads will be able to contribute an opinion about these.

Good Luck with your search

I have driven to Valmeinier but it isn't a short drive. Several resorts in the Maurienne valley are a lot cheaper than the "first division" resorts. You could try some of the resorts in Germany or Austria if driving. Plenty to choose from

Praz de lys is surprisingly pleasant. If you don't need hundreds of lifts and lots of nightlife it could work.

@under a new name, agree with you about Praz de Lys. We always have at least one day there each winter - but tend to pay real money as it is inexpensive and save our reciprocal days for our trips to Les contamines etc.

@Timc, depends whether your half term collides with FR holidays and half term as "defined" by the TOs. In Wales we are sometimes lucky in that our half term collides with neither FR hols nor TO half term.

the smaller resorts aren't necessarily the cheapest... some of the bigger ones such as Les Arcs or La Plagne I have found can offer very cheap last minute deals whether it is half board or self catering you are looking for, although the more lifts there are the more expensive the ski pass

Isn't there a French resort which has 'inclusive' lift passes (Chamrousse?)? That ought to save a few bob...

I`m off to Val Cenis/Termingnon on 7 th March ; £350 for slope side apartment and flexi tunnel crossing, sleeps 4 at a squeeze, £135 for 6 day pass. No queuing, friendly locals, what`s not to like?

you can get various "all inclusive" deals with accommodation, life pass, ski gear etc. Google "ski tout compris".

Sounds a great deal, @cstreat, and all the signs are for excellent snow conditions, maybe the best of the season so far snowHead

Snowtrex, which I think is German, offers competitive prices with hire and passes included, to most resorts...if you are driving. We use Peak Retreats, whose price included a loyalty discount of £50, as we always drive ( to visit some good places on the journey ). We find the Flexi upgrade on the tunnel the real selling point...turn up when you like, no queue, private lounge with coffee, wifi, papers and picnic for journey.

We used Snowtrex for Chamrousse this year. We found our deal through Groupon.
Absolutely no problems, and the 4 person apartment that we stayed in (2 adults, one 7yo) was spot on. Easy walk to the lifts, and the skiing has a good variety of slopes, especially if you are still learning.
We flew to Grenoble and hired a car. This enabled us to buy all our groceries near the airport and travel around as we wanted.
There are a couple of free buses that link the three resort centres.
It was really quiet in the first week in Jan, but the webcams don't show it being too busy this week.
Most restaurants are in 1650, with a small number in 1700 and 1750.

I went to St Sorlin D'Arves, part of Les Sybelles area, a couple of times at half term. Cheaper than larger resorts for passes, food, etc. I don't know about hotel prices we rented a very nice apartment which was a reasonable price. It wasn't too busy either year although both were during the french holiday.

Vars was quite cheap last half term. Not many Brits at all. Only heard one English voice the whole week. Maybe worth considering.

@Overs, as JohnHSmith has suggested have a look at Valmeinier. Snow coach have a hotel there which is cheap -ish even at half term. They're flexible with arrival/departure dates too. It's not the Ritz by any stretch but perfectly comfortable and only about 30 seconds walk to the snow.

We went there last year and it seemed relatively quiet.
