Hi, anyone else got their holiday planned in the next month to the alps and a bit worried about snowfall? I am... may be going to a glacier but don't want to be skiing on ice all week, Italy is looking like a good place for anyone booking last minute holidays at the moment!

Am off to Avoriaz at the end of March and not worried about the snow at all. Decent depths in resort at the moment and more to come over the weekend and into next week.

@Griggs, there is snow forecast for the alps next week, so do you think this will last into the end of march?

I'm planning a trip to either Tignes or Val Thorens in a couple of weeks, we always go that week and have never really had a problem. It can be a bit freeze/thaw in some places, for example I went to Alpe D'Huez 3 (or 4) years ago and it was a bit like that then. My rules for March are go high, not too far south, not a south facing resort and book late, but that's just me.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@gixxerniknik, yeah well we are about to book for 14th march and found a pretty good deal £725 half board and ski pass, so is tignes a north facing resort?

Tignes is high enough not to worry about it I think! ADH is mainly south facing.
Thats not a bad deal at all. Where d'you find that?

Ah right hence the poor conditions in Alp D, have a look around neilson or local travel agents go and tell you've got a deal at £750 and they usually beat it for you (we have our own ski's and boots)

@Bene, yeah I agree, although id like to think that 14th march wont have spring snow in Tignes, we are yet to book as we are holding out to maybe look at last minute weather forecasts but I think we may take your advice book it and let be what ever we get

@GO1996, If you're flexible follow the snow. Parts of Italy have had a lot of snow with more on the way. I assume by the 14th the French schools have all finished their trips?
March can be a mixed bag, it can still be very wintery at times. Friend is in the 3V this week and says it's been very warm but the snow is great and noticeably better up in Val T-no surprise there.

@Bene, you're right, mountain weather = you never know what's going to roll over the hill next, hence it pays to ski in all conditions if one is (like me) a holiday skier. Rule 5 applies!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@Bene, Italy does look good at the moment, hmm I will have to have a good think although I really want to ski tignes

@GO1996,
I think outside high season holding on to the last minute is seldom a bad strategy to get the best snow. Having said that mid march in Tignes you will definitely get good conditions. The whole area may not be perfect but there is so much high north facing stuff that good conditions are assured.
Might another area be better, quite possibly but a realistic assessment cannot be made until a fair bit closer.
As far as Italian conditions are concerned the Le Fornet area of val d'isere usually benefits when there is snow falling in Italy it is very close to the border. It had great snow when I was there a couple of weeks ago and according to Steve Angus' recent post it has benefitted again.

You know it makes sense.

@T Bar, thanks for your insight, I think we will go with tignes as you said mid march should not be a worry its more like April when the worries kick in, temperatures rising and that, cant wait to ski Tignes the runs look amazing
