Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where to buy in London...

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, I'm off to Bulgaria in Feb and am wanting to pickup a couple of items before I go. Namely a new snowboarding jacket, fleece and possibly some socks.

I know of a few places around town to pickup gear (Covent Garden) but I'm not convinced I will be getting the best deal there and will probably be paying a premium price. Does anyone know of any good places in and around Zone 1-2 of London where I can go knowing I am not going to get ripped off?

I heard TK Max do ski clothing but I don't know what it's like. I also want to get something that is half decent. Maybe around 150 pounds for a jacket give or take 50.

Any thought or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

benthomas,

There is a good-ish HH discount shop in Ashford, Kent but I doubt it is worth the trip unless you are passing.

Will not Convent Garden haggle...??

I was around Convent Garden couple of weeks ago, theres an Ellis Brigham, Oakley, North Face and Snow+Rock so plenty to choose from there...

Yeah I know about those ones, no doubt there is heaps there but is that where I'm going to get the best deal. Surely their prices are going maximum due to the location and reputation of Covent Garden being expensive. Is anyone familiar with any places around London where a better deal might be had?

benthomas, you could always check out the gear in their shops in covent garden and then check other options on-line.

benthomas, I went to the Convent, chased a few nuns, tried on a couple of jackets in E&B, North Face etc, and then went home and bought the jacket from www.gear-zone.co.uk for more than 25% less, saving myself over £50.

benthomas, try Decathlon in Surrey Quays. They have really cheap gear but good quality. Well worth the trip (if you're not near). This season I got some new technical socks, a puffa jacket, 2 micro fleeces - all for under £50. You could also try Blacks down High Holborn or a Millets that stocks ski gear (not all do).

Ellis Brigham, Snow & Rock etc charge full RRP because they can but the CG stores are huge and give you lots of choice. They should have products in your budget (Helly Hansen jackets would be worth checking out at that price). Shops with bargains will have less choice and so the decision is whether you would prefer to get a deal or to get the most suitable kit you can afford (my preference is always the latter).

Other places to try (but not necessarily a lot cheaper) are 47 Degrees (Fulham for their big shop, Putney Bridge for the snowboard specific shop) or Boardwise (specialist snowboard shop in Chiswick).

Alternatively, M&S do some quite decent ski/boarding gear. Decathlon has already been mentioned, as has t'internet.

Happy hunting!

Hi all, thanks for the advice I checked out all those places on yesterday so I think I'll end up buying from one of them. I also need some advice on a good mid-layer fleece jacket that would also be good worn on its own.

I don't want one with a hood either because that will just get in the way under my ski jacket. I was looking at some of The North Face Windstoppers. Would these be any good as a mid layer with breathability etc? If not does anyone have any suggestions as to what would work as a good mid-layer. Any links to products would be great too.

I am wanting it to double as a jacket I can just wear out and about as well. What do you all wear as a good comfortable mid-layer for sub -15 degree temps. Would I be better just getting a coupleof light long sleeve fleeces?

Thanks.

benthomas,

A soft shell that has a warmth element to it and a windbreak facilty is a good mid layer
Patagonia do one and MH do a a few. I vary the mid layers and use a Polatec 300 fleece for the cold days and a MH Velocity which I haven't tried out under a shell. For walking around in the resort I use an old flying jacket which is toast.

benthomas, TK Maxx usually have some brand name products at the start of the season some ok and some with slight defects but always cheap. They may have some bits left.
