Poster: A snowHead
|
Fell on that very snowy day 27th dec when lots of folk got stuck on the road. slow fall . felt a pop but no pain , got up and fell over 4 more times as every time I tried to turn my leg gave way. In the end came down on the blood wagon. French doctor said it was a complete ACL tear based on the lachman test and jerk test. I was given a brace to get home. Private physio in uk agrees and given lots of exercises to ensure complete range of movements and told to use elbow crutch rather than brace. Then saw NHS orthopod who say no tear, based on anterior draw test only. Btw. by the time I saw him , no effusion and fairly good range of movements. (I have been working on this). awaiting NHS MRI scan.
Given a rehab program by private physio yesterday who is sceptical of NHS man.
I guess I have to wait for MRI but have been told these don't always show everything.

@whenintignes, welcome to SH & sorry to hear this on your first post.
Your symptoms sound identical to mine when my knee gave way with a pop & no pain, and I tried to ski off and it gave way again.
I had a rupture diagnosed in resort (flash clinic with its own MRI scanner) but luckily no associated damage - was reconstructed in May 2008, skiing again next season and no issues since: hope your recovery works out for you

Thanks for your reply. Well done skiing again the next season. Hopefully will get the MRI soon. I have been told probably 6 weeks. Thanks for the knee guru link.

@whenintignes, best of luck. I ruptured mine in Dec 2004 - recon in May 2005 and would have skiied the following season if I hadn't been pregnant by then
I went on to have many years skiing and hockey playing afterwards.... Until 8yrs later I came down on it wrong during hockey training. I still have half of it left with a brace that is good enough for skiing but I have had to give up hockey.

Thanks for the replies. I now have a date for the MRI. So will keep going with the physio exercises till then. Tried swimming. Front crawl fine but absolutely no way treading water so couldn't contimplate breaststroke!

Sounds identical to mine - 23rd December - except I didn't fall over again. Ruptured ACL, bone bruising, no other damage. Who suggested breaststroke? I was specifically advised against it because of twisting action. Am I right in thinking that straightening/bending your leg is hard and uncomfortable?

@whenintignes, don't even think about breaststroke

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Your symptoms are sounding more and more like you have joined the club I'm afraid. Remembering that horrible "floppy" feeling doing unweighted sideways movements (such as breaststroke legs, or for me when I first did mine, turning over in bed so the bad side was up) still makes me feel queasy. Twisting is bad and may risk damamging the menisci.
Physio, physio physio and wait for the scan. (I really hope I'm wrong!)

@whenintignes, Poor you! I agree with @holidayloverxx, & @skiinghamster, - no breast stroke legs. Also, if it is still swollen, you need to concentrate on reducing that with ice & elevation. Good luck & let us know how you get on.

From what you say in your post id put a tenner on you having an ACL rupture.
They can be difficult to assess in the first week or two especially if the surgeon isn't seeing ACL ruptures every week.
Lachman test is far more sensitive than Anterior Drawer, in fact for that reason i don't always bother with an anterior drawer test.
Lachman test on a sore knee requires quite alot of experience to interpret it hence why the resort doctor was fairly certain. In my experience they
rarely get it it wrong because they see so many.
Either go back to him/her or get an opinion from a knee specialist
