Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Calves too Big for Ski Boots

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Calves too big for my ski boots. I'm not the biggest person, 180lbs and 5'8, but my calves are massive. Even with the extensive and slack given on boot I still cannot fit in them.

Does anyone have any great exercises I can do to get these calves smaller? Weight lifting no go, just makes them bigger!

Ladies boots are shaped differently and usually lower on the calf, they're not all pink. Might be worth trying?

Would it be indelicate to ask if the bulk is muscle? If not then the best way is to do some serious training to reduce body fat. Otherwise see a bootfitter and see if there are any adaptations they can make. A good fitter can do wonderous things. Where are you located? Ladies boots will not cut it.

Even with loosening the straps to the last notch, unfortunately these boots don't work. But I will definitely check out the ladies boots, hopefully you are right with no Pink! Smile

I have 19-20 inch calf muscles. there are boots out there that will fit but they are not common, the trick is to find a good boot fitter who knows his stuff and they will find you a set of boots to fit

Sadly my boots are no longer made (rossignol soft 1) but I've had Salomon and Koflach boots before

@GearSpoke, A good boot fitter will have a jig to stretch out the rear of the cuffs to accommodate your calf muscles. Solutions4Feet at Bicester (CEM on this forum) has one.

@GearSpoke, i'm sure others here want to know but are too diplomatic to ask (I'm old enough to be tactless): how did you come to have a pair or ski boots that don't fit?
Surely you can't have got them in a shop - you would have tried them on.
So: online?

@Jonpim, i wondered that. Maybe the OP has put on a lot of weight since buying the boots. In which case......

Thank you for the heads up! I know Mt Baker is covered in snow, raining today Sad ice is in our future, but the fact I am limited to having brusedcalves just may be worth it to get a few good days in then go hunting for good boots! Smile

Not tackless, I would say straight to the point, and a good point at that! Smile

Actually I have owned them for a while, unfortunately after being on the rowing team at Sonoma State, my calves grew too big for my boots. Of course the diet they had us on was not the best. But then when it was ski season again my boots didnt fit. when I went down to the store they marveled at the fact I could barely fit into anything. So my assumption those working at the local ski shop just didn't know what I needed, so I ended up leaving, depressed but looking for alternative ways. So with the new years, I have started dieting, and have limited my weight lifting! Just cardio. Hopefully, I can get these suckers down to a decent size!

I already know anything I order offline, will never fit the same as they show in the photos. Depending on their return policy, and sales I tend to avoid making large purchases online!

@GearSpoke, find your local boot fitter rather than standard ski store, www.epicski.com is a US based forum where people can probably give you someone local to you in terms of fitter, there are a load of things that can be done...the calves will not get smaller so the boot has to be made bigger, there are a variety of jigs and methods of bending the cuff of the boot back to accommodate a large calf muscle so all is not lost, just work with a boot fitter and you should get it sorted

good luck

Good Point! Does anyone in this thread live in The Great Northwest (Bellingham area) and can point me in the right direction?

By the way, I know this is late but, @Shredder who ever you are, your Calf joke "have you tried milking them" Nice!

@GearSpoke,

Don't know what size you're talking about, but my calves are 21½ inches, and I fit into Salomon Quest boots with the ratchet moved to it's very last hole.
