Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

There's some decent snow around, Wicklow area, Nephin and Mourne Mountains all got some. Has anyone been up around there? Enough to board back down? Looking for a hike and board location for Thurs.

Shredder, don't think there's enough up the Wicklow mountains yet, could be wrong but doesn't appear to be as much a covering as a couple of years back.
Did it in Jan '10 & '13, hard work and not great snow but still great feeling to board within a 30 mins of your own house.

West Clare - "Mount" Calan, Jan 2010. One run of about 150 to 200m. A variety of watercraft, bodyboards, surfboards a surf canoe and a motley collection of snowboards.

Was up mamturks on 28th very small bit of snow on the top, not skiable, looked like slightly more on the top of the mayo mountains but seemed to have all melted by the 30th with the warmer weather

I believe the highest peak is around 800m or so, only hills really. You still need to take care up there , the weather can change very quickly. I'm not part of that group of skiers', just heard about them and thought I'd share. The OSNI do have online maps, but don't provide a freeview facility Sad

I live by nephin, and I would hike it in winter wouldn't chance boarding down though as you could get stuck on boggy bits, we would need far more snow than we have had in a long time. Its a moot point though as the snow has melted on Nephin range.

Thanks for the info, wasn't sure if it was do-able just looked like it was holding the snow well.

Not dead, just haven't got the right conditions to head out yet wink

Nice bit of snow last Sat, Sunday was the first real opportunity to get out. Was up in the hills around Blessington area this morning and the snow has already receded a lot. Needs another layer of snow before being able to venture out in it. I'm all ears if someone has been further south of the Sally Gap or in the Mournes. This weekend looks like snow making weather higher up on Sunday/Monday with the precipitation forecasted.

Where near Dublin / Wicklow can I get to the snow line without driving on a road that would be dangerous in snow condtions? Want to bring son out to play in it. Got car stuck in Chrone woods before. Can't see me driving up Sally gap, Cruagh or Hellfire in a Passat.

You could drive to Glenmalure via N11 exit 8 kilmacanogue to Laragh/Glendalough and on to Glenmalure at the crossroads turn right -this cul de sac will bring you to Baravore. Park here and cross bridge. Turn right and keep walking. If there's any snow you'll find it here! Stay safe!

Thanks Timmy - but thought that road up from m11 towards glendalough was dodgy enough if it's cold enough else snow?

No it should be ok - only possible tricky bit between Laragh and Glenmalure . If that's the case then you can always access Glenmalure via Rathdrum eg the open end of the valley. If you're all reasonably fit it's also possible to get a guided hike up Luqnaquilla - the most snowsure mountain in Ireland we 'd guess . Good fun and a lengthy but not arduous hike - I've been up with kids as young as seven and as long as you have proper gear and are with someone who knows what they're at its one of the best days out you can have near Dublin and if there ain't snow on Lug then there isn't anywhere else nearby!

I've skied in the Sperrins, Antrim Hills and on my own farm near Coleraine in 2010. Packed down the snow with tractor loader, then used loader bucket as a chair lift. Great craic, but it was a once in a lifetime snow event. Weeks of sub zero temps and about 12 inches of snow.
