Nick-o, I have a bit of Spyder kit. It's nice stuff, with good technical fabrics and features which are nice (but not essential). As with all 'premium' ski kit, the law of diminishing returns applies, so I wouldn't say that it is necessary to pay the kind of money that Spyder costs if you are looking for good performing skiwear, but you won't be disappointed if you do decide to buy it. There seems to be much more Spyder kit around this season than I can remember seeing in previous years. I wonder if Spyder are devaluing the brand by introducing cheaper ranges?

Elizabeth B, I luv my jacket I do
Nick-o, I think that it's great kit but there is a very limited choice in the UK, & most of that is their top end/price jackets - which for me are waaay to warm/heavy & expensive. I prefer a breathable hard shell jacket & then wear breathable layers accordingly & the jackets stocked by S&R and Filanski (sp) are Spyder's traditionally styled super warm/bulky ranges.
Best to buy in the US if you are holidaying there as you'll pay in dollars what you'd pay in pounds here. I bought my 'Venom Big Mountain' hard shell in an end of season sale in C1650 in March 04. It wasn't available in the UK but it's US online price was $480 at the time & I think I paid £180/$310 for it, which is a bargain for a jacket of it's technical spec. It's now had 6 weeks use & shows no signs of wear at all.
The one thing I like about the Spyder jackets is their functionality in respect of their pockets. There are the right number, of the right size in the right places etc., with quality zips that you can open with one gloved hand on a lift etc. I've tried plenty of other quality jackets re technical qualities etc but they just didn't come close in this respect. Most of us probably don't need these super technical fabrics etc but we do all have to carry stuff around with us.
Be cautious of the Spyder gear offered on ebay as a lot of it is counterfeit.

Yeh guys the spider distribution has a big push in the UK this year, they have moved away from the corporate ski school uniforms market and selling more consumer ski wear, still all good products with the same tech spec as the uniforms

I've never worn Spyder but I have to say that I don't really like the way it looks and in terms of technical performance/features I don't think it compares well with, say, Arc'teryx stuff. Now Arc'teryx is blimmin expensive but still a fair bit cheaper than Spyder. If you are serious about buying Spyder you should look at an Arc'teryx sidewinder shell jacket and a good fleece (not necessarily Arc'teryx - Mountain Hardware, Mountain Equip or NF would all be cheaper).

You know it makes sense.

jedster, I agree with you. If I hadn't had got my Spyder at the deal I got & with the limited Spyder choice in the UK, I would have gone for the Sidewinder shell which is a cracking piece of kit.
However, arc'teryxjon just doesn't sound right
