Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Medical Condition and insurance

 Poster: A snowHead

I'm about to renew my insurance and the dreaded medical questions need to be completed

While I have been referred to a specialist the conclusion was that I am not injured/sick. I had an MRI and it shows wear and tear as expected in a person of my age.

So I guess if the question comes up, what advice to people give based on past experience?

@kioksor, If it comes up tell them, as it will remove any reason for them not to cover you in the event of a claim. Small price to pay, if they increase the premium, against a potentially large bill. Worst case they might not cover the specific reason of your visit.

Snowcard don't seem to like skiers with age related problems. I no longer use them, I switched to MPI Brokers.

Indeed MPI have a very sensible medical declaration.

I have back and neck problems and had an MRI and other tests about a year ago as my sciatica had almost crippled me. I completed the InsureAndGo medical declaration and added in the back and neck issues along with high blood pressure and cholestoral. They are covering me for all these conditions for an additional premium of £52. A small price to pay for piece of mind.

I've got a few knee related issues, I told them the details and no change to premium. I'd be honest and shop around

I had very good results when declaring a pre-existing condition to MPI Brokers. They had a practical, helpful and inexpensive approach.

I use ski-insurance.co.uk. They picked up every penny of my bills when I ripped my ACL two years ago and I have used them twice since (with my knee issues fully-declared). The extra premium for an existing condition is almost negligible.

Whatever you do, don't use the AA, they are dreadful when it comes to claims. Claims often go to an entirely separate claims handling subsidiary or outsourcer, whose job is to verify the truth of your declaration. So be honest, as some claims handlers are absolutely out to find even the slightest excuse to invalidate your claim due to a prior condition. I had a significant condition that I thought would cost a fortune, but it turned out to increase the premium by only £20/year, which seemed reasonable to me.

Direct line home insurance gives free worldwide insurance incl wintersports as part of plan. No problem when I spoke to them about test I was having which they classed as a pre existing medical condition but didnt make an issue of it.

DEFINITELY you need to tell them. Especially when it comes to back problems. Otherwise, if you something terrible happened and you ended up paralysed you would not be covered, and you and your family could end up penniless.

As an aside I have a friend who had a sore back following a ski injury a few years ago, it was slowly improving with physio (and not that bad in any case). It was suggested to him that he may have had a fracture originally, and that he could undergo an MRI, but it wouldn't be likely to change the management, it would still be physio. Strongly advised him not to have the scan, as should it show a fracture, he would be declaring it for the rest of his life! Pleased to say he is now pain free

Unfortunately, I'd guess that this is very limited insurance and won't provide adequate cover for many (most) people. For example, if they say you're not covered for off piste, that includes not being covered for skiing slightly off into the interesting soft stuff just off the side of the piste. This is by no means something only experts do, as many instructors will do this with early intermediate groups.
