Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Two days near to Tokyo

Hey Guys and Gals
Need some advice.
I am going to Tokyo for the Tokyo marathon which is on sun 22 Feb. Was due to fly home on the Monday but could not resist the urge to change flights to include a few days skiing, so now flying on the thursday.

I had initially thought I would catch the bullet train to gala yuzawa on the Monday and return direct to narita on the Thursday to fly home. However after doing a bit more research I am rather taken with the idea of Nozawa Onsen my problem is if I will have enough time to get to Narita on Thursday. My flight leaves at 15:15 so will need to be at the airport at 13:15. There are multiple trains from Nagano that would work, but my issue is getting to Nagano earlier enough. From what I can see first the nadasen express bus from Nozawa to Nagano only leaves at around 9am and will be too late. The other option is the local train from togari nozawa to Nagano with departures at 7 and 7:40 which would work, however that means getting from Nozawa Onsen to Togari Nozawa really early.

So my real question is how easy would it be to arrange a taxi to get me to Togari station. What happens after a dump how quick do the Japanese get the roads open? Also I understand there is a local bus but cannot find any timetable, would it be likely to run so early? Should I revert back to gala yuzawa or anywhere else I should be looking at?

Can't really help too much, but I'm sure a taxi would be fine. Roads are generally cleared very efficiently and in late February you'll probably not get big road closing blizzards.

Good luck with the marathon. First time for Tokyo? I did it in 2012. It's a great run, really fun route and such enthusiastic support (up till the last few km when it heads up onto raised expressways, annoyingly!) I'm super impressed that you're up for skiing so soon after a marathon!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks MagSeven. Looking forward to the run.
Will be my first time in Japan. Coming from South Africa I have to take any chance I get to ski, so if the legs are a little tender they will just have to get on with it.😀
