Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Being cheeky with ski carraige on Swissair...

When using easyjet I always take two pairs of skis in a big bag as you book by the ski bag. Flying on Swiss for one trip this year however and whilst carraige is free, they say 1 pair as opposed to 1 bag. Just wondered if anyone has just ignored this and got away with it?

No, but I intend to this season. Interested to hear if one gets busted for this, and what the consequences are...

@hollando, ...only two? One year I think the handlers would have needed a 60 tonne crane to lift our 'one pair oh really' ski bag. I worried at the time that we might be singlehandely responsible for a crackdown, but nothing was said.

I think it's definitely an area where arbitrary crackdown may happen but I think this very variably applied by the special baggage handlers, who of course handle all carriers.

@Harry Flashman, I think the consequences for people who, when discovered, get all aggressive are very different to those who remain calm and respond by saying - 'goodness, I'm really sorry, I didn't realise...'. Having escorted absurd amounts of expedition kit through, all a flagrant breach of most regs, a smile and an 'opps...sorry' can go a long way. Not always, but often. And the worst that can happen is that you have to do what you're actually supposed to do and actually pay for...never had to leave stuff behind...

@valais2, true. I have never been a fan of shouting at people - being polite and apologetic often works when you need to be works wonders with folk who are used to gits yelling at them!

I think we (family - 4 adults now) usually have 2 ski bags, and a couple of snowboard bags. We put clothes in with the skis to pad them a bit and because there's the space in the bag. The board bags get one snowboard, but a lot of clothes/board boots/etc. If they're getting picky about how many pairs of skis you put in, I wonder if they'd object to this as well?

I've taken a couple of pairs on Swiss before, but as I've quiverkillered the skis I only had one set of bindings so it wasn't immediately obvious that there was two pairs in there.. other than the weight

Always at least 2 pairs per bag... Three in one bag on last trip. Never a problem.

Yeah I'm confused on this as well, I even emailed Swiss and they just confused me even more.

Can anyone clear this up for me please?

@shoogly, +1 - flew Swiss 3x last few seasons and each time carried x3 pairs in Dakine wheelie bag - no issues (I always carry my boots within baggage but they will allow a boot bag as well)

@captainslack, For clarity IF you buy a Swiss ticket with hold baggage (i.e. NOT the new 'No Baggage' no frills ticket) then your skis and boots will be carried in addition to your 23kg hold allowance. NO ISSUES - If you buy the No Baggage ticket, its what it says on the box, no baggage and that also means NO skis!!!

If you lose your bag in transit your insurance will only pay out for 1 pair and no clothing unless you specifically inform them in advance and prob pay an additional premium.

To confirm:

With Swiss you can take (providing you are not economy light)

1 x 23kg bag
1 x ski boot bag
1 x ski bag/ board bag

if you travel with kids you can also take 1 x pushchair and infants get 1 x23kg allowance too.

I regularly fly with Swiss - pretty convinced I could get an elephant through in a boot bag if I tried.

What's the weight limits on the ski and boot bag?

As i'm going out for the whole season I'm wanting to take out 2 sets of skis and my snowboard, Packed into my ski bag with clothes wrapped around it comes to ~30kg, plus my boot bag which is another 5kg and then my luggage (23kg allowance?) on top of that.

I know this is too much but i'm wondering how much I'll have to take out of my ski bag. Don't want to have to leave my snowboard behind but might have too. Flying out of city airport - are they too strict?

Many thanks for all your help so far

@captainslack, Most airlines have an upper weight limit (of around 32kg IIRC) for most baggage from a H&S point of view, so be a bit careful/check you ski/board bag allowance and weigh before you go.......

They weighed the ski bags on the way back from GVA a couple of weeks ago. No weighing at Lahr however

I think the likes of Easyjet are now becoming an issue as they now define the exact weight of your combined "skis and boots" @ 20kg in addition to the normal 20kg baggage - and I have been on the receiving end of them enforcing it. Then again it could be a good excuse to get rid of my old boots that are a bit heavy...... wink

So that's Easyjet and Swiss. Has anyone had any problems with other carriers? I noticed that my Esprit holiday invoice specifies one pair per charge which I don't remember seeing before. That's with Flybe.
I agree with Harry Flashman, about being polite. One of my jobs is customer service based and I'll go way out of my way to make my customers happy . . . but there's nothing more guaranteed to put my back up than being insulted or shouted at by someone who's doing something they shouldn't. On the other hand if someone nicely breaks the rules I'm only going to make the effort to stop it if it's dangerous or unfair. And when my back's up I'm only going to do what I absolutely have to and then I'm going to be as awkward as possible about it!! Passive aggressive heaven.
