Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski boot newbie

Hello!

This is my first post. Basically I have been awarded a little prize in work, I'm off skiing to Meribel in Janurary and although I'm a skiier of many years I am looking to put my prize towards a pair of ski boots- which I know nothing about.

Basically - is there a boot which is the rolls royce of ski boots?

thanks! nick.

Welcome to Snowheads Nick-o,

The most important thing about ski boots is how well it fits. My advice would be to see a good boot fitter(s) and make a selection from trying many good boots.

PS There's a search function under "User Facilities" (top left hand of screen in mountain pic).
Whatever you do don't type "Wengen" in the search function.

Nick-o, Wait until you get into resort and then troll around looking at the boots on offer. There's no one special boot, but different makes are different shapes, so first find out which make is the right one. Then decide on how rigid or soft you want (depends mainly on your technical ski-ing level), and then go and try on lots. Beware, this does take a lot of time, and you must try the boots on for at least half an hour in the shop.

If you ask around who's the best bootman in town, you should get a concensous of opinion at some point. then put yourself into his/her hands. A good bootfitter can make all the diff. Don;t ask the reps - they won't know and will just send you to the shop that gives them discount! Try the local ski schools and/or the ski patrol guys. They'll know, as they'll visit the same shop.

Enjoy your prize. Very Happy (& welcome)

Nick-o, And be careful not to get too stiff a boot - unless you can flex them they will hold back your skiing pleasure.

err no. You're basically at the mercy of the ski boot fitter who will find a boot that fits your ankle and foot shape. Expect your boots to be seriously personalised for your feet unless your're really lucky! Boots are nothing without a good boot fitter. Cool snowHead

Well I tried them both on and they fitted well at the end of the day it comes down to price. But - would anyone recomend the GTS range, performance wise.

Nick-o, However well they fit in the shop in Cardiff, they are likely to need tuning during the first week of skiing. Also they will feel much easier to flex in any shop and this effect will probably be heightened in a shop in a much warmer country.

Therefore, if you find a boot you like, wait and get it in resort. It's likely to be cheaper, and you get the tuning as part of the after-sales service. If you buy in the UK it'll cost you to get them tuned in resort. SERIOUSLY - sorry all boot retailers in the UK, but look - after 50 years skiing I still bought the wrong pair 2 years ago, and I did all the right things ....... hurt, hurt hurt Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

easiski,
you obviously have a problem with UK bootfitters, I think the most important point is to find a good bootfitter where ever they are, there are plenty of lousy fitters in the alps, just becuase they live in the resort does not make them an expert in biomechanics of the ski boot Skullie Skullie
