Hey! I'm Vix - this is my first post, nice to meet ya!
Just wondering if any of you know of any ski resorts in Europe (or out of interest, worldwide, except this season I'll probably just head somewhere close) where there are still places you can go out at night and properly rock out.
A few years back I went to stay at Alpenrider in Kirchberg and there was an awesome pub in town open til the small hours playing metal, grunge, punk etc, and it was a killer night out. It can't be the only place surely?
I will do ANYTHING to avoid the europop house bulls**t . All the best snowboard movies always have the best punkrock soundtracks, It's probably my age but I can't understand how anyone enjoys that tacky bleepy european dance hell, when there's so much brutal music to watch people get totalled by a snowstack!
Plus, who doesn't love a metaller who can ski/snowboard?
Cheers!
Vix

its called 'euro sh*te' because thats where it comes from and where its played.
I totally agree with the rock soundtrack point so why not the bars ? Oddly they show the film but play different music than the soundtrack.
I've not seen any rock bars but havent been to Austria due to no smoking ban which is a killer for my other half and kids
On the same line, at the NFL game at Wembely the other week, the support was Little Mix when all the inter play stuff is rock
Very odd
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@MissVix, totally with you on that. That's why I used to love Funky's in St Anton (ok not really metal, but heavy guitar and drums at least); I was gutted that place closed!
Oh no, I got my hopes up then..! Glad to hear it's not just me. Yeah I heard the place I liked in Kirchberg turned into a eurosh*te bar too.
Austria is great, but the smoking really chokes me too. Maybe Finland might be a good place to check out. Are they heavy smokers? They definitely have a good few metal bands coming outta there.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Unless I specifically go to clubs in Chamonix, most places have live bands. You'd have to search to find something quite as heavy/metal as you're looking for, but I've certainly never had any problems finding rocky stuff - there's a huge variety. I'd expect most large towns would have the same options e.g. Innsbruck.
Edit: and there's usually a mini-mosh pit and crowd surfing to the in-house band in Chambre Neuf most evenings Though it's generally softer/poppier rock. Great fun though! Way better than any apres ski I've been to with cheesy club tracks.
Hey fixx, I went to Chamonix in 2012, is that the place with horsehair covered stools and a westernish type theme? Or the place over by the river? I did enjoy the live bands, but after that I found most places turned to pop. Happy to be proved wrong though! Anything that's not club trash is good

One thing that the alps does not provide is a good alternative rock scene. I have never seen a good rock band out here. I've seen the odd band do covers of Madness, but thats not good 2 Tone Ska in my opinion.
Chambre Neuf's band in my opinion is awful pop rock. Slow music that betters to holding a swaying lighter in the air than moshing too. But drunk seasonaires and tourists lap up that crap and they can go home saying they daringly moshed during their apres ski. They wouldn't hold up for 30 seconds in a real punk rock pit. Infact these pits of amateurs can be more dangerous as people don't know what they are doing, especially when people fall over. In a punk pit, if some one goes down you try and help pick them up straight away, you're all their together to have fun.
Other ski bum bands that tour the alps play covers of much safer and popular indie music. Again tourists lap it up, singing and clapping along!
I think punk and metal is really too alternative at the moment. Bars and clubs would rather have dj's playing drop after drop of dub step.
I of course understand that if people like that, that's fine, everyone has different tastes. I've grown up listening to punk and ska and it's ingrained into me.

Do people in France know what good music is
Note: the French have other qualities, musical taste just isn't one of them IMO.

Do all the Scandis that invade Engelberg every year create a market for some venus with better music? I don't know the place very well but might be worth a bit of a google exploration?

When I went to St Anton in 2011 the house band in the Kandahar were Mad Company. I'm sure you can tell from the name the sort of stuff they played. We used to go in at apres time for a couple every evening and enjoyed them, I think they played again later. I don't know what sort of stuff they play in there now.

Not always true. The Beatsteaks played a rad gig in Dornbirn a couple of weeks ago. One of the more intense mosh pits I've ever been in anyway!

On a popular culture level, no. But nor do the Brits. Look at all the trashy music related TV shows.
There is some great French Hip Hop with superb rhythm and beats
and some of their fanfare music is superb!

Usually some decent rock/metal cover bands play in Tignes through the season.
You know it makes sense.

Papperla Pub in Zermatt always has a rock band on of sorts. It varies year by year, but a tendency to rock covers. No guarantees though. Nothing that would be considered ground breaking, but live and normally of a high standard.

One of the things that amazes me is the number of really dull obscure sort-of-house tracks that get played at the Folie Deuce bars. Maybe that's why the dancing is so mediocre? I don't think I'm getting totally past it, enjoyed a great night at the Craig Charles Funk & Soul club in Camden last month, he rocked the house big time. And some great northern soul tracks. Does anywhere in 3 valleys cut it??

That would be my idea of heaven. Day skiing followed by night jumping about like a lunatic to punk and 2 Tone, with a bit of olde-worlde ska thrown-in as recovery tracks.

Some great bands in the Farinet in Verbier.
Catch it on the right night with the right band and the right crowd and it get pretty lively
Not quite as good but still some good bands in Meribel too.

I skied in Are, Sweden earlier this year and hoped for metal but there was none. Although apparently Children of Bodom played there at some point in the past.
I found a place called black and orange in solden, Austria, which is maybe a bit biker rock but better than nothing. Never been and the website looks a bit poo-poo so not sure of quality.
Awesome question though. Would love to have answers for this global ski areas, not just Europe. The usually helpful metaltravelguide.com is useless here
Heard a couple of decent rock / metal bands in the Loup in Tignes.

Go to Norway! Both times we were in Geilo they were playing metal on the lifts!

Tahoe has a few bars on the California punk touring circuit. For dobby saw The Beat playing in a casino basement.

@Dave of the Marmottes, was that the Beat with the original singer Dave Wakelin? I think he moved to America when the band split. Rankin Roger fronts up the Beat in the UK now and they are still a fantastic band, seen them loads of times in last few years.

what a dreadful idea - not the metal, particularly. But imagine if you couldn't ski in Austria without oompah trash all day long or in France without ghastly French pop (and Italian pop is equally bad). If you want music, take it on your phone and pipe it into your helmet (that's what I do if I am skiing alone...).

I was in the Irish bar in Sauze d'Oulx last season. The "DJ" offered to play requests so up I went.
Me - Can you play some Led Zeppelin please? Whole Lotta love or Houses of the Holy would be good even Stairway To Heaven.
DJ - Sorry mate the boss won't let me play Led Zep coz they're too heavy. I can play some AC/DC though.
Me - OK. Walks away (dazed and) confused
I too despair of the Europap and Disco Oompah. I've often thought of taking my band out to the Alps for a few weeks. A great way to supplement the skiing. Maybe when I retire

@halfhand, but do you read the posts on here - people actually, amazingly, really, really, go for that oompah disco stuff. Is your band called Led Balloon?

Yeah Dave Wakeling and The English Beat. Think he lives in San Francisco so it's a relatively local gig and they play a few times a year.

@pam w, Fortunately we go down better than a Le(a)d Balloon
I think people mostly go for drinking heavily in the apres bars, the presence of disco oompah is incidental. They may not know or care if there was a "classic" rock band playing but at least it would be a bit different

I remember a mountain restaurant in the Solaise area of VdI playing really good classic rock (Hendrix, Cream, Love, Doors) - was a breath of fresh air. Not much good for the evenings though.
In my experience absolutely the worst music is to be found in Sud Tirol. Every bar and bubble seemed to be piping a very similar local pop selection from about 20 years before. It was so bad that it genuinely put me off going back (this was Solden am Ortler / Solda which is in many ways a FABULOUS place and a real hidden gem).

There is a Rock Bar in Solden. It seemed to possibly also be a gay bar. Or maybe it had just been taken over for the night by a large crowd of leather wearing dutchmen.
can you see to ski with all the hair in your eyes?

PDS do a rock festival called Rock the Pistes every year, usually the third week in March iirc.

And there is "Rock The Dolomites" as well. early season or late season - put on a bit of something to attract folk along.

I was in PDS for Rock the Pistes this year, it takes a rather generous view on what 'rock' is If you went where the concerts weren't it was lovely and quiet though!
Full Metal Mountain looks to be an actual metal festival, but it runs in Nassfeld after the end of the main season? It is the first winter metal festival I've seen with appropriately illegible band logos!

@MissVix, In 20 odd years, Chambre Neuf is the only place I've found that caters for Classic Rock, Blues, Metal at Apres times on a regular basis. Hmmm I'm thinking of a change of career.
In fairness some of the bars in Austria intersperse the Disco Oompah with a proper rock song. Think the Ice Bar in Mayrhofen does "rock bands" now and then.
Could also be an opportunity for a Rammstein tribute act
