Dear all, getting a Friday pm flight to Geneva, before going to resort on Saturday am. Staying at the Holiday inn express at the airport. Either a good restaurant recommendation nearby, or one close to Geneva centre railway station. Wife and two adult daughters, needing to be fed in a pleasant place. Any recommendations would be gratefully received.

@twoodwar, opposite station is on rue du Mont-Blanc is the Cafe de Paris which does good steak & chips in special sauce.
La Trattoria, http://www.latrattoria.ch/ou.html, cheap (for Geveva) and good Italian, great pizza.
To bottom of rue du M-B and turn left a little along lake, Casanova is very pleasant.

If you want steak and chips, I recently had a great dinner in Wine and Beef just down from the station, definitely planning to go back http://www.arthurs.ch/fr/content/le-cadre-1/. They also have very good salads etc not just steak, and it's decent value for Geneva! (@under a new name, haven't tried Cafe de Paris yet, but it's on the list)
Despite being an Indian/Italian mix-up (?????) this place is decent for Indian, but I've never dared try the Italian, also near the train station: http://www.italindia.ch/

Just opposite Geneva Cornavin station (free ticket from the baggage hall at the airport) is a restaurant/brewery I have been to twice, other members of the family have been there more often, called Les Brasseurs. I have been there early evening with an elderly aunt, my husband, and our 3 grown up sons. Food has always been good, and reasonably priced, but the beer has always been truly exceptional! Every member of the family has enjoyed the meal every time!

@fixx, interestingly the "Beef" option at W&B is the same/similar to the formula originally created Chez Boubier - Café de Paris - much copied by the de Saurs family in Paris and elsewhere, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'Entrecote - two servings of entrecote in a "special sauce" and chips (possibly unlimited).
@CaravanSkier, I don't think I've eaten aux Brasseurs but the beer is indeed good and I had a rather excellent meal at a sister restaurants some weeks ago. The menu there was, I think a little more "refined" but I only had a burger anyway and very good it was too.

@under a new name, Yes, and the same thing again at Relais de l'Entrecote - I've eaten there a few times, and it's pretty good, but I do prefer the Wine and Beef variant, especially the sauce. Plus they allow a smaller and cheaper option of just one serving.
But that's why Cafe de Paris is on my list - need to have tried all three to do a fair comparison

@under a new name, the menu choice was not huge, but varied enough so that everyone felt there was something good on the menu to for them. I would not go there if I was looking for 'fine dining' or a long drawn out gourmet meal, but for dinner early on a Friday night (we were there at about 6pm) before heading up to the ski resorts the next day, or dinner on the Sat you are enroute home it ticks all our boxes. The younger members of my family now like to go there if they happen to be in the area on business and have never been disappointed.

Hi @CaravanSkier, just noticed your post on Les Brasseurs. I've some hours to waste in Geneva, awaiting a transfer, later in the month and decent beer sounds very tempting. Do I understand that one can get a free train ticket to cornovin from the airport station ticket office? Would that also be true of a return?

@nickH, There's a ticket machine just before you pass through customs into the arrivals area (to the left of the door I think) - not from the station ticket office..
I don't believe you can get a return, but it's only 3.50 CHF for the way back. You might be able to get a free day pass, worth checking.

The free ticket is valid for use by arriving travellers for 80 minutes, I beleive its valid for all public transport. If you stay overnight at a hotel, hotel or campsite most of them also give you a free public transport pass which is even valid on some of the boats!

Thanks all so far, greatly appreciated. Anything from anyone near the airport? Will need to sit down at 9.30 to 10pm. Late obviously, and not Spain, where we would of course get high tea at this hour. Not so certain we would be welcome so late on. Will be doing a trip advisor trawl, but would obviously rather have some first hand snow head recommendations

@twoodwar, you could try Meditsol, although it's a little further away.
But we went to the Trattoria about 21:00 a few weeks ago, and a party came in as we were finishing up.
Les Brasseurs serve at least a limited menu till gone midnight http://geneve.les-brasseurs.ch/pdf/geneve/a_la_carte.pdf Friday and Saturday. Actually looks like most of the menu!
It might get a little rowdier as the evening progresses.
Brasserie Lipp very good and open till 02:00
Cafe du Centre possibly better value, open till 00:00
Trains back to airport finish at 00:42.

@twoodwar, a pleasure. I'd just have something lined up and booked in advance (not sure les Brasseurs takes reservations, although they might well do). In demand restaurants tend to require reservations here - not necessarily the expensive ones either, especially if you need something "special" like a late table.
For ease, I'd probably go Trattoria, Brasseurs or Montbrillant.

Well not near the railway station and he'll have to sell his two daughters in the Paquis to pay for the meal. 
You may as well include the Pied de Cochon and the Cafe du Palais if you want to include the old town.
