Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Morillon bootfitter

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Have persuaded my OH that the best possible pressie he can get me for Xmas/birthday is my own boots.

We'll be going to Morillon in Feb half term so would be considering getting them then.

Can anyone recommend who to go and see?

As it's half term week and I know it will be very busy, do I need to make an appointment?

Alternatively, we hope to be skiing a second week in early March, though not sure where yet. Would I be better to hire in Morillon and buy in that March week when presumably it will be a lot quieter?

Annie, I've not been for a few years but none of the shops in the area stood out as being very impressive. At the same time, none of them to avoid. I don't think the rental equipment was brilliant.

It will be better for your other half to ski both weeks in his boots. So he's probably much better of getting them from a good boot fitter in the UK then wearing them lots before the first trip to make sure there aren't any obvious issues. Then if any tweaks need to be made before the 2nd week they can be done here easily enough...

Annie, as parlor says there's doesn't really seem to be one. At least I've never heard of one. I was recommded one on Flaine but they both (the fitter and guy who recommended them) turned out to be idiots.

I was skiing today with a girl who'd had a snow and rock fitting disaster, the boots are way too big for her. So pick carefully if you have to use the UK.

I just got back from the Massif and was surprised at how many bootfitters have opened up in Samoens. Twinners is in the village (one of the more established shops) and it has all the right stuff and you can get your boots moulded to your feet with the pro-machines (I've seen them in Ellis Brigham in MK). The cost of the boots in Euros makes buying in France quite attractive.

Why not rent at Twinners and see how you rate the service - my advice is to take you time - make sure you have their full attention. Cool

Oh God this is NOT good news!! ise, are you saying you've never heard of a bootfitter in Morillon or never heard of a good one? (Academic in a way really as they'd have to be very obviously idiots before I twigged anyway!) I've seen loads of boots for sale in the various rental shops - what do people do about getting them morphed to fit them???? ..or am I just being an idiot!

Freestyle, In the nicest possible way, I suspect that I'm going to get pretty c**p service regardless at half term - apologies to the undoubtedly superb under all circumstances bootfitter snowheads, of course I don't mean you! I've rented from two or three places in Morillon in the past and they're so busy that unless you scream very loudly they seem to assume that any old 'tat' is perfect for you...or maybe they've got me pegged and KNOW that any old tat will be good enough for me

So, what's a girl to do? I really really want to get boots this year but equally I really not keen on getting them in UK for all the reasons snowheads have alluded to in the past. (Not really knowing/having much of a clue about what I want/need can be added to that list!)

As I see it I've got a couple of options:

a - Take my chance with someone in the GM ......and pray a bit

b - Rent nice comfy but probably inappropriate boots in Morillon and buy in March ( probably somewhere around
ADH - maybe someone can make a recommendation for there???)

c - Take the chance and get them in the UK - anyone know anyone near Kent?...........and pray a lot!

d - Is it worth widening the net a bit to include resorts fairly close to Morillon i.e. Morzine or would I just spend the
whole week to-ing and fro-ing to get them 'adjusted' and spend no time skiing? Assuming of course someone
on this forum know someone who's likely to do a good job!

Sorry to bleat on - It's the price you more experienced snowheads pay for imparting your knowledge to us dimwits!
but at the moment with a new mortgage, kitchen etc.etc. ad nauseaum.....and 2 weeks skiing Very Happy £300+ or so is more than I can comfortably write off at the moment!

Annie, One option would be to contact SMALLZOOKEEPER on here, he is a bootfitter in Chamonix. It would take you just over an hour to drive to Cham, and you could test out the fit on the slopes there.

Annie, are you close to Brighton? You should go and see Andy at SoulX. I must admit he's never fitted boots for me but I understand that he is very good. It's got to be worth the drive, even if you don't buy boots. SoulX also have a sale on at the moment so you could save some £££.

You can PM Andy on here, his username is Magseven. Or find them here www.soulx.com

Good luck. Twisted Evil

A bit late and slightly off-topic - for general equipment rental I can certainly recommend Verneret Sports (Twinner): 2 shops in Morillon village. We've used them a number of times (the one next to the supermarket) - always good equipment and helpful service from an ever-patient Cecile Verneret. But I wouldn't fancy boot-fitting at half-term anywhere in a resort rental shop, unless they're specialists - I'd rather be up the mountain...
