Poster: A snowHead

Currently out in Crans Montana and it looks like the lift at Aminona has been decommissioned. It does not appear on the 14/15 ski map either. Would be interested to know when it went and the reasons behind it.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Steve Sparks, Thanks for that. Much googling had not come up with any clues.
Looks like a big development with five more towers.

cad99uk, This is much discussed in and around Crans, but I agree, very little on the web. The CMA lift company is relying on this inward Russian investment to rebuild the lift. The old lift was very affectionately regarded by our family - a great piece of antique kit but it was costing a lot to maintain. We'll miss it. Fantastic view as you ascend, from Matterhorn to Mont Blanc Massif.
Will the new development happen? Not clear. Minor ground works have been completed. But the full development? Many of the Russian investment properties in Crans are big, hyperexpensive, and empty all year. Odd.
Meanwhile, two things to bear in mind. The runs from Petit Mont Bonvin will be amazing this year - secret stashes all over the place, and no-one going up there. The only link will be the Toula chair from Violettes, and so the 'racing' blue from the top - fantastic slope for teaching people to fully carve on every part of their turn, should be virtually empty. No queues at the quad high speed chair - so MORE SKIING TIME. In the time between the old lift coming out and any new one going up, there will be MUCH FUN to be had.
The second thing is that the lift company IS putting in investment elsewhere, just as investment in other resorts is crashing. A new high speed lift to replace Barmaz and Cabane de Bois, which will speed things up a lot. And a lot of upgrade work on the Plaine Morte funitel to 3000m.
In February and March last year we had no queues at all, anywhere. Arrive, sit down, back up to the top. Unlike the hordes in 3V and the bottlenecks in the 4V. Brilliant weather, excellent conditions, and no crowds. Wonderful.
It was a great lift at Aminona and my kids took their first cable car ride in it, aged 4 months. And then throughout every winter. They were definitely upset to see it dismantled in the car park.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

valais2, Thanks for taking the time to provide more background. We are only summer and autumn visitors to Crans but can see that you are going to enjoy the Aminona sector being less crowded.
There were indeed several cabines looking abandoned in the car park - perhaps one would suit your garden
Many thanks.

I hope that the replacement gondola has bigger pots for skis, as mine did not in any way fit!

snowbunny, I liked the way they randomly swung in every direction from that single hanger - yep...mad grappling with my and the kids twin tips - some of which fitted in the carriers and some which just about did if you got the angle right - scramble to get in through the tiny doors. Wiggle round the centre pole - pull gear out of aggressive slammed doors and then roast on the way up due to the huge window area and absence of decent ventilation - and of course get wet fingers stuck to the freezing aluminium sides of the gondola when it was minus 12.
But they did look as if they were made by an aircraft company - top engineering.
Loved it.
